Tata Steel has commissioned India’s first coke oven gas injection project at its Odisha plant. The plant aims to reduce fossil fuel consumption, lower carbon emissions and improve blast furnace efficiency.

Tata Steel has commissioned a coke oven gas injection project at its Meramandali plant in Odisha. The company said the initiative is the first of its kind in the Indian steel industry. The project is installed at the blast furnace and aims to support Tata Steel’s low-carbon steelmaking efforts. It also forms part of the company’s target of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

On 10 September 2026, Tata Steel shares fell 1.04% to close at ₹186.78 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), underperforming broader markets even as the Sensex and Nifty ended higher on Thursday.

The initiative allows Tata Steel to use coke oven gas, a by-product rich in hydrogen and hydrocarbons, in the blast furnace. Such gas is generally used for power generation and heating or may be flared at integrated steel plants. With the new system, coke oven gas can replace some of the fossil fuel used as a reducing agent. This is expected to lower fossil fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The technology also enables the blast furnace to operate with three fuel sources. Tata Steel said this could improve operational flexibility and efficiency. The project was implemented with technology partner Paul Wurth-SMS and equipment supplier Kobelco. The company has also tested other low-carbon blast furnace technologies, including coal-bed methane, hydrogen and biochar injection.
