IndiGo has signed an MoU with CFM International for over 1,000 LEAP-1A engines. The proposed agreement supports fleet expansion. Further, it will boost India's MRO capabilities.

IndiGo has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with CFM International to acquire more than 1,000 LEAP-1A aircraft engines. If finalised, it will become the largest engine order ever placed with the manufacturer.

The agreement highlights IndiGo's long-term fleet expansion strategy despite ongoing supply chain and engine maintenance challenges across the global aviation industry.

The LEAP-1A engine powers the Airbus A320neo family. These aircraft form the core of IndiGo's fleet. The airline is already the world's largest operator of the A320neo family and has one of the biggest aircraft order books globally.

IndiGo announced the development on X, stating that both companies had signed an MoU that could lead to a record agreement for more than 1,000 LEAP-1A engines.

According to IndiGo, the proposed partnership supports the government's vision of expanding India's aviation sector. The airline said it would also help develop world-class maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities for CFM LEAP engines within the country.

Domestic MRO facilities allow airlines to service engines locally rather than sending them overseas. This can shorten maintenance turnaround times and improve aircraft availability.

The Indian government has been promoting the growth of domestic MRO infrastructure through policy reforms and tax incentives. The aim is to position India as a global aviation maintenance hub.

The agreement came in light of ongoing supply chain disruptions among manufacturers. This issue has led to hundreds of aircraft being grounded worldwide.

Manufacturers, including CFM International and Pratt & Whitney, have struggled to meet rising demand for new engines and spare parts following the strong recovery in global air travel.

Financial details of the proposed transaction have not been disclosed.

If the agreement is finalised, it will strengthen IndiGo's partnership with CFM International. It will also support the airline's fleet expansion plans. IndiGo aims to add hundreds of aircraft over the coming years. The expansion is intended to meet rising travel demand.
