Aditya Birla Group Enters Wires Market With ₹1,800-Crore Ultravolt Bet

The Aditya Birla Group has launched Ultravolt with a ₹1,800-crore investment, entering India's wires and cables market as the second-largest player by capacity. The business will initially focus on wires, cables and conduits.
The Aditya Birla Group has entered the wires and cables market with the launch of Ultravolt, backed by an investment of ₹1,800 crore. The group said the new business will be India's second-largest wires player by capacity at launch.
Ultravolt has been launched under UltraTech Cement as part of the company's broader push into building solutions. UltraTech already operates across cement, ready-mix concrete, building products and white cement, and the new business takes it further into the electrical side of construction.
The group plans to build Ultravolt into a national brand and aims to make it one of the country's top two players in the segment within five years.
Ultravolt Targets 1 Lakh Retailers
The company is taking a pan-India approach from the start instead of expanding one region at a time.
Ultravolt Director Dilip Gaur said the business plans to reach more than one lakh retailers and use over 5,000 UltraTech Building Solutions outlets to widen its distribution. The initial rollout will cover more than 500 districts and 6,000 PIN codes.
At launch, the company will sell home wires, flexible wires, cables and conduits. It plans to add more products over time, including specialty cables, products across a wider range of voltage ratings, and other electrical accessories.
New Gujarat Plant Starts Production
Ultravolt's manufacturing operations are anchored by a new plant in Jhagadia, Bharuch district, Gujarat. The facility has an installed capacity of 10,98,000 kilometres and started commercial production on 1 September.
Sriram Rangarajan, CEO of Ultravolt, said the initial product range has been designed for residential, commercial, industrial and infrastructure use. The company intends to gradually broaden its portfolio of electrical products.
Birla Sees Long-Term Growth In Wires And Cables
Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the $72-billion Aditya Birla Group, said the wires and cables market is being supported by the country's urbanisation, electrification and digitisation trends.
The group expects rising housing demand, expansion in power infrastructure and the growth of data centres to create more demand for wires and cables in the coming years.
Ultravolt is the group's fourth new business launch in the past three years, following its foray into paints through Birla Opus, B2B e-commerce with Birla Pivot, and jewellery retail through Indriya.
Birla said the group's new business strategy is focused on sectors where long-term growth is visible and where its brand, capital, scale and existing business ecosystem can give it an advantage.
With Ultravolt, the group is now looking to build a significant presence in a market that is already crowded with established electrical brands.
