FSSAI Issues Notices To Nestlé India And Hindustan Unilever Over Alleged Misleading Health Claims And Food Labelling Violations

FSSAI has issued notices to Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever over alleged misleading health claims and labelling irregularities. The action raises concerns about compliance with food safety regulations.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to Nestlé India and Hindustan Unilever (HUL) over alleged misleading product claims and regulatory violations. The action concerns food labelling, advertising claims and compliance requirements for specialised nutritional products.
The regulator has also taken separate enforcement action against other food businesses. This includes suspending licences over food safety concerns and initiating proceedings in cases involving alleged violations.
FSSAI Flags Claims On Horlicks Products
HUL has received a notice concerning its Horlicks Mother's Plus Kesar product. The notice raised concerns about claims linking the product to a healthy birth weight. According to the regulator, such wording could mislead consumers by suggesting that the product itself guarantees specific health outcomes.
The regulator has also flagged claims on Horlicks Women's Plus Chocolate nutritional drink. These include statements about improving bone strength and bone health. FSSAI also questioned the use of the word “healthy” in the product claims. It raised concerns over the “No Added Sugar” label despite the presence of maltodextrin.
Nestlé Faces Labelling And Approval Concerns
FSSAI has raised concerns about Nestlé India's Resource Renal vanilla-flavoured powder, designed for the dietary management of people with chronic kidney disease. The regulator said the product required prior approval under the applicable rules governing foods for special dietary and medical purposes. It also flagged a missing mandatory vegetarian or non-vegetarian symbol on the label.
Separately, the regulator has identified inconsistencies in the labelling and online descriptions of certain Nescafé ready-to-drink products. These include differences between the “Flavoured Milk” description on the front of the pack and the “Proprietary Food” declaration on the back. FSSAI has questioned whether the classifications and related advertising comply with the applicable food labelling regulations.
