Market Weekly Wrap: Sensex And Nifty Post Best Week In Six Months As IT Stocks Rally, With Key Factors to Track on Monday

The Sensex and Nifty 50 gained over 3% and 2.79%, respectively, in the week ended 16 October 2026. IT stocks led the rally, while crude oil, foreign investor activity and upcoming earnings remain important market watchpoints.
Indian stock markets recorded their biggest weekly gains in six months in the week ended 16 October 2026. The Nifty 50 gained 2.79%, while the Sensex rose by 3.13%. The rally was largely driven by a recovery in IT stocks and a stronger rupee. However, gains were less widespread among mid-cap and small-cap stocks.
On Friday, the Nifty 50 closed at 23,146.15, up 0.65%, while the Sensex finished at 74,729.27, gaining 0.56%. Investors now have several developments to track as trading resumes on Monday, 19 October, before the market holiday for Dussehra on Tuesday.
What Drove The Market’s Weekly Gains?
IT stocks were the main contributors to the rally. The Nifty IT index rose 11.7% over the week, its strongest weekly gain in 18 years, according to Reuters. TCS, Infosys, HCLTech and Tech Mahindra were among the leading weekly gainers. Auto, realty and metal stocks also advanced, while healthcare and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) shares lagged.
The rupee’s appreciation and domestic institutional buying also supported equities. However, foreign investors continued to sell shares. Higher crude oil prices also remained a concern for companies facing increased input costs.
Which Factors Matter As Trading Resumes On Monday?
Investors will be tracking the latest quarterly results, particularly those of major banks. HDFC Bank reported a 5.6% year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit, while ICICI Bank’s consolidated net profit increased by 22.3%. Their earnings, commentary and margin trends provide fresh information for the market to assess.
Global market movements, crude oil prices, the rupee, and foreign institutional investor activity will also matter. Investors can check the latest GIFT Nifty indication before the opening bell, but remember it is only an indicator, not a guarantee, of the domestic market’s opening direction.
Another event on the calendar is the Jio Platforms IPO, whose anchor investor bidding is scheduled for Monday ahead of the public issue opening on 21 October. The holiday-shortened trading week also makes the earnings calendar and market liquidity worth monitoring.
The recent benchmark rally is substantial, but it has not been matched equally across market segments. Crude oil above $100 a barrel, continuing foreign selling and the ability of companies to deliver earnings growth remain important considerations.
