Closing Bell, 12 October 2026: Bears Growl As BSE Sensex And Nifty 50 Nosedive To Close In The Negative
Markets ended lower, with Sensex and Nifty 50 declining despite gains in broader indices.

Markets ended sharply lower on Monday. Both the Sensex and Nifty declined. Broader markets gained, while investors monitored crude oil prices and global cues.

Bears once again came to haunt investors as markets witnessed a sharp decline on Monday’s trade. Persistent selling from foreign institutional investors (FIIs), coupled with rising bond yields and other headwinds, pulled benchmarks down. Upon close, the:

  • Sensex tumbled over 500 points and stood at 71,924.68, down 0.76%

  • Nifty 50 nosedived over 150 points and stood at 22,363.35, down 0.70%

Broader markets, however, ended in the positive. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ended 0.08% and 1.42% higher, respectively.

Sector-wise, the Nifty Media and Nifty Auto gained and finished 4.60% and 0.90% higher, respectively. On the other hand, the Nifty PSU Bank declined and closed 1.18% lower.

The following stocks emerged as the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Oil prices eased on Monday. The decline followed remarks by US President Donald Trump that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to pause attacks on energy installations. At around 15:35, Brent crude December futures stood at $105.68 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude November futures stood at $92.68 per barrel.

Gold and silver traded lower on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). At 15:37, MCX gold December 2026 futures stood at ₹1,49,855 per 10 grams, down 1.09%. At the same time, MCX silver December 2026 futures stood at ₹2,24,001 per kg, down 0.78%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

  • Monthly inflows into mutual fund systematic investment plans (SIPs) climbed to an all-time high of ₹32,490 crore in September 2026, compared with ₹32,297 crore in the previous month. Inflows, however, were up 11% from ₹29,361 crore a year earlier.

  • Bajaj Alternate Investment Management (Bajaj Alts), part of Bajaj Finserv, has garnered nearly ₹950 crore in commitments at the first close of its maiden fund focused on commercial office real estate. Investors include leading family offices, institutional investors and high-net-worth individuals.

Markets could remain choppy in the coming sessions. Crude oil prices are likely to influence sentiment. Lower oil prices may offer some support. However, continued selling in heavyweight stocks could limit a recovery in the Sensex and Nifty 50.

That said, with the September-quarter earnings season now underway, investors will look for signs of a recovery in corporate earnings to help stem the ongoing decline in benchmarks.
