US Fed Meeting Begins Today

The US Federal Reserve begins its two-day policy meeting on July 28, with the interest rate decision due on July 29. Markets widely expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged, while investors will closely watch Chair Kevin Warsh's comments and the policy statement for clues on the outlook for interest rates.

US Fed Meeting: The US Federal Reserve begins its two-day monetary policy meeting on Monday, July 28, with the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) set to announce its interest rate decision on Wednesday, July 29. Policymakers will review the latest inflation, economic growth and labour market data before deciding on the federal funds rate.

This will be the second policy meeting chaired by Kevin Warsh, who took over earlier this year. The Federal Reserve is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged, extending the pause seen through 2026 after a series of rate cuts in 2024 and 2025. At its June meeting, the central bank kept the federal funds rate in the 3.5%-3.75% range.

The meeting comes as markets continue to monitor developments in the Middle East following recent US-Iran peace talks. Investors are also awaiting key economic data this week, including the Bank of Japan's policy decision, the first estimate of US second-quarter GDP growth, and China's manufacturing PMI.

In its weekly outlook, Kotak Neo Research said it expects the Fed to leave rates unchanged this week. The firm said the market's focus will remain on the policy statement and Chair Warsh's commentary for signals on the rate outlook. While its base case remains unchanged, Kotak noted that some investors have started pricing in the possibility of an earlier rate hike as inflationary pressures persist. It said a move in September cannot be ruled out if incoming economic data continues to support a tighter policy stance.

Warsh has also changed the way the Federal Reserve communicates after policy meetings. Unlike his predecessor, he has opted for shorter policy statements and no longer publishes his own dot-plot projections, leaving markets with fewer direct signals on the committee's thinking.

The Federal Reserve will release its policy statement at 2:00 pm ET on Wednesday, July 29, followed by Chair Kevin Warsh's press conference. Both will be streamed live on the Federal Reserve's official website and YouTube channel.

For viewers in India, the policy decision is scheduled for 11:30 pm IST on July 29, while Warsh's press conference is expected to begin around 12:00 am IST on July 30.
