NSE cash market turnover rose to a 23-month high of ₹27.7 lakh crore in June as foreign investors hit a record 31.5% share in equity futures for a third consecutive month.
Trading activity across India's equity markets picked up meaningfully in June, with cash market turnover on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) climbing to a 23-month high of ₹27.7 lakh crore from ₹26.9 lakh crore in May, pointing to broad-based improvement in market participation.
Cash Market Snapshot
-
Cash market turnover: ₹27.7 lakh crore in June, up from ₹26.9 lakh crore in May.
-
Highest level in 23 months.
-
Proprietary traders: Largest share but slipped to a six-month low of 33%.
The decline in proprietary share against a rising overall turnover figure suggests other investor categories are becoming more active, widening the participation base rather than concentrating activity among a narrower set of players.
Derivatives: Foreign Investors At Record High
The derivatives segment told a more striking story:
-
Foreign investors: Record 31.5% share of equity futures turnover in June.
-
Foreign investors retained top position among all participant categories for a third consecutive month.
-
Domestic institutional investors: Share rose to 13.8% in June.
Options Market Shifting Too
In equity options segment, measured by premium turnover:
-
Proprietary traders: Share eased to 48%.
-
Individual investors: Participation rose to 39.3%.
The growing retail share in options reflects continued deepening of individual investor engagement in the derivatives space, a trend that has been building through much of 2026.
What The Numbers Point To
Taken together, the June data shows an equity market where overall volumes are rising, concentration among proprietary traders is easing and foreign investors are committing more meaningfully to derivatives than at any point on record.
