Income Tax Deadline Today: Tax Audit Reports Due October 21; Who Must File And What Happens If You Miss It

The extended deadline for filing tax audit reports for AY 2026-27 ends today, October 21. The Income Tax Department has also been sending reminders ahead of the deadline, while the ITR due date for applicable audit cases is November 21.
The income tax deadline for filing tax audit reports for Assessment Year 2026-27 ends today, October 21, after the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) extended the due date from the earlier September 30 deadline.
The Income Tax Department has stepped up reminders ahead of the deadline, with its e-filing portal carrying fresh email and SMS campaigns asking taxpayers and professionals to complete pending tax audit filings by October 21. The department has also reminded applicable taxpayers to file audit reports in Form 10B or Form 10BB by the same date.
The compliance push comes after the department reached out to around 12,000 tax professionals whose tax audit filings were running below last year’s levels. More than 19.5 lakh tax audit reports for AY 2026-27 had already been filed when the outreach was launched, while a significant number remained pending.
The October 21 deadline, however, should not be confused with the deadline for filing the income tax return itself. For taxpayers covered by the extension, the ITR filing deadline has been moved from October 31 to November 21, 2026.
Income Tax Deadline Today: What Is Due On October 21?
October 21 is the extended deadline for furnishing tax audit reports for applicable taxpayers for AY 2026-27.
CBDT had earlier extended the deadline from September 30 to October 21, giving businesses, professionals and tax practitioners another 21 days to complete the audit process.
The Income Tax Department’s latest campaign specifically reminds taxpayers that tax audit reports are due on October 21. It has also issued separate reminders for Form 10B and Form 10BB, which are audit reports applicable to certain trusts, institutions and other eligible entities.
For tax audits under Section 44AB, Form 3CA is generally used where the taxpayer is already required to get accounts audited under another law. Form 3CB applies in cases where the accounts are not required to be audited under another law. The prescribed particulars are furnished through Form 3CD.
The tax audit report is uploaded by the chartered accountant on the Income Tax e-filing portal and must subsequently be accepted by the taxpayer through the portal.
Income Tax Deadline Today: Who Needs To File A Tax Audit Report?
The October 21 deadline does not apply to every income-tax taxpayer. It applies to specified taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited under the Income Tax Act and who fall within the category covered by CBDT’s deadline extension.
Tax audit requirements can apply to businesses and professionals once prescribed turnover or gross-receipt limits and other conditions under the tax law are met.
Taxpayers should therefore check whether they fall under the audit provisions rather than treating October 21 as a general ITR deadline.
For applicable taxpayers, the audit report comes first. Their corresponding income-tax return can be filed by the extended November 21 deadline.
Income Tax Deadline Today: CBDT Sends Reminders To 12,000 Tax Professionals
Ahead of the October 21 deadline, CBDT expanded its SAKSHAM NUDGE compliance initiative to tax professionals.
Around 12,000 professionals were contacted through SMSes and emails after the department identified practitioners who had filed fewer than 50% of the number of tax audit reports they had filed in the previous financial year.
More than 19.5 lakh tax audit reports for AY 2026-27 had been filed when the department launched the outreach, according to reports citing government officials.
The campaign is aimed at accelerating pending filings without immediately resorting to enforcement action.
The Income Tax Department has continued its deadline campaign this week. Its official portal lists an October 16 email campaign titled “Time to File Your Tax Audit Report | Due by 21 October 2026”, along with a separate campaign reminding taxpayers to file Form 10B/10BB by October 21.
What Happens If You Miss The Tax Audit Deadline?
Taxpayers required to get their accounts audited should not treat the October 21 deadline as optional.
Failure to get accounts audited or furnish the required audit report within the prescribed time can attract a penalty under the applicable tax provisions.
Under the existing penalty framework, the amount can be 0.5% of total sales, turnover or gross receipts, subject to a maximum of ₹1.5 lakh, depending on the circumstances of the case.
A penalty is not necessarily automatic in every delayed-filing case. Relief may be available where the taxpayer can establish a reasonable cause for the failure, subject to the applicable provisions and facts of the case.
Missing the audit deadline can also complicate subsequent tax compliance, making it important for taxpayers with pending reports to coordinate with their chartered accountants and complete the process.
Income Tax Return Deadline For Audit Cases Is November 21
Taxpayers should keep the two extended deadlines separate. The tax audit report deadline is October 21, 2026, while the ITR filing deadline for the applicable audit cases is November 21, 2026.
CBDT moved the ITR deadline from October 31 to November 21 when it extended the corresponding audit-report deadline from September 30 to October 21.
That means taxpayers covered by the extension do not have to file their applicable income-tax return today merely because the audit-report deadline expires.
With the October 21 extension ending today, taxpayers with pending audit reports have until the end of the revised filing window to complete the required compliance.
