Hindustan Copper shares rally nearly 5% as copper hits record high; here's what's driving the surge

Hindustan Copper shares gained sharply as copper prices hit a fresh record, with supply disruptions, China demand and US tariff uncertainty supporting the metal.
Shares of Hindustan Copper extended gains through Tuesday's session, tracking a fresh record run in global copper prices amid tightening supply and growing expectations that the US could impose tariffs on refined metal imports.
The stock opened higher against Monday's close of ₹508.90 and gained further through the morning. Hindustan Copper was trading 3.05% higher at ₹524.40 at 9:30 am, before rising 4.73% to ₹533.20 by 10:08 am on the BSE. Around 4.4 million shares changed hands across the BSE and NSE during the period. The broader market was weaker, with the Sensex down 0.53% at 75,728.
The rally came as copper prices extended their advance for a fourth consecutive session on the London Metal Exchange (LME), touching an all-time high of $14,617 a tonne, according to Bloomberg. Three-month copper futures were up 0.65% at $14,509 a tonne in early trade before firming to $14,581 a tonne later in the Singapore session. Copper has gained more than 17% so far this year.
Why are copper prices rising?
Copper's latest rally is being driven by a combination of supply constraints, structural demand and expectations around US trade policy.
Kotak Neo said copper continues to receive structural support from ageing mine supply and rising demand from grids, data centres and electrification. However, it noted that the recent acceleration has increasingly been driven by trade flows, with expectations of US tariffs drawing substantial volumes of metal into the US, reducing availability across the LME network and increasing pressure on short positions.
The research desk also flagged near-term supply risks after Chile's August copper exports fell to their lowest level in more than a year, amid mine disruptions and severe weather.
While copper should remain well supported as long as US tariff policy remains unresolved, Kotak Neo cautioned that stretched positioning and elevated prices leave the market vulnerable to weaker demand or a firmer dollar.
China demand adds to copper's support
Demand signals from China, the world's largest copper consumer, are also supporting prices as the country's manufacturing sector enters its traditional peak season.
Inventories at Shanghai Futures Exchange warehouses fell to their lowest level since 2024 last week, adding to concerns over copper availability.
Copper's longer-term demand outlook also remains supported by increasing requirements from power grids, data centres and electrification.
On the supply side, operational problems at several major copper projects have raised concerns that global mined copper production could post its first annual decline since 2017, unless output recovers in the second half of the year.
Hindustan Copper shares: What is supporting the stock?
The rise in copper prices is significant for Hindustan Copper because higher copper realisations can support the company's earnings.
The company reported strong Q1 FY27 numbers, with revenue from operations rising 81.4% year-on-year to ₹936.5 crore. Consolidated net profit attributable to shareholders increased 162.5% to ₹352.4 crore during the quarter.
Hindustan Copper has also seen significant gains over the past year. The stock has risen around 115% in one year, although it remains broadly flat on a year-to-date basis.
The government recently sold a stake in the company through an offer for sale (OFS), offloading more than 5.80 crore shares, representing up to 6% of the company, including the 3% green-shoe option. The floor price for the offer was ₹514 per share.
Hindustan Copper shares: What to watch
The outlook for Hindustan Copper remains closely linked to the direction of copper prices. Continued supply constraints and firm demand could support the metal, while weaker global demand or a stronger US dollar could put pressure on prices.
For the stock, the key factors to watch will be copper prices, global mine supply, demand from China and the company's ability to sustain earnings growth.
Kotak Neo expects copper to remain well supported in the near term but has highlighted the risks associated with elevated prices and positioning. Any reversal in the current supply-demand balance could therefore influence the commodity as well as copper-focused stocks such as Hindustan Copper.
