Adani Power Shares Gain 2.08% After Bhutan Pact For 770 MW Hydropower Project

Adani Power shares gained after the company partnered with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project. The venture is part of a wider 5,000 MW hydropower development programme between the Adani Group and Bhutan.
Adani Power announced a partnership with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power to develop the Chamkharchhu-I Hydroelectric Project.
The 770 MW project will be developed through a 49:51 equity partnership, with Adani Power holding 49% and Druk Green Power 51%. It will be implemented under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model.
Located on the Chamkharchhu River in Bhutan’s Zhemgang District, the peaking run-of-river project is scheduled to begin construction in the first half of 2027. It is targeted for commissioning within six years of groundbreaking.
The announcement supported the stock in morning trade, with Adani Power shares rising 2.08% to ₹205.18 at 09:35 am on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The market reaction came as the company expanded its participation in Bhutan's hydropower development programme through another sizeable renewable energy project.
30-Year Concession For Chamkharchhu-I Project
The project will operate under a 30-year concession from its commercial operation date. Its peaking run-of-river design is expected to help meet periods of higher electricity demand in Bhutan.
The development is expected to strengthen Bhutan's energy security during the winter months. Surplus generation in summer can be exported to India, providing an additional channel for cross-border renewable power trade.
Second Major Hydropower Deal Between The Partners
Chamkharchhu-I is the second major hydropower collaboration between Adani Power and Druk Green Power.
The companies had earlier signed an agreement for the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project in September 2025.
The latest development forms part of the broader 5,000 MW hydropower partnership between the Adani Group and the Royal Government of Bhutan, established through a memorandum of understanding signed in May 2025.
Both organisations are also evaluating additional hydropower opportunities under the wider programme.
Focus On Energy Security And India Power Exports
Adani Power Managing Director Anil Sardana said hydropower would play an important role in South Asia's energy transition. He said the Chamkharchhu-I project would contribute to energy security, lower carbon intensity and shared sustainability objectives.
Druk Green Power Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin said the development would strengthen Bhutan's energy security while creating opportunities to optimise and export surplus clean energy to India.
The project is therefore positioned to address Bhutan's winter electricity requirements while allowing excess clean power to flow into the Indian market during the summer months.
