HDFC Bank Internal Probe Finds Two Senior Executives Shared Confidential Information With Outsiders; Internal Review Underway: Report

Two senior HDFC Bank executives have come under scrutiny over the alleged disclosure of confidential information to outsiders. The bank has confirmed an internal review is underway and said appropriate action will be taken after it is completed.
HDFC Bank's internal investigation found evidence that two senior executives shared confidential business strategies and potentially market-sensitive information with outsiders, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday, October 21, citing people familiar with the matter.
The investigation was triggered after senior officials at India's largest private sector lender raised concerns over possible information leaks, according to the report. The two executives oversee key businesses and functions at HDFC Bank and have been formally informed about the findings. Their identities have not been disclosed.
The findings were also reported to senior management and some members of HDFC Bank's board earlier this year, Bloomberg reported. The lender is examining whether the information shared outside the bank was misused.
HDFC Bank confirmed that a review is underway but did not confirm the allegations against the two executives.
“In line with our policies, an internal review into this matter is currently underway to gather and evaluate all relevant facts,” an HDFC Bank spokesperson told Bloomberg. “Appropriate action will be taken based on the findings, once the review is complete,” the spokesperson said, according to the report.
The bank declined to comment further on the ongoing review, citing the integrity of the process and the privacy of the individuals involved.
HDFC Bank Internal Probe: What Happened?
The investigation began after some senior HDFC Bank officials raised concerns that confidential information was being disclosed outside the lender, Bloomberg reported.
The subsequent probe found evidence involving two senior executives and the sharing of confidential business strategies and potentially market-sensitive information with outsiders, according to people familiar with the matter cited in the report.
Both executives have been informed about the findings. HDFC Bank is now examining the matter, including whether the information was misused. No disciplinary action against either executive has been announced so far.
HDFC Bank said it takes reports of potential violations seriously and remains committed to maintaining high standards of ethics and governance.
HDFC Bank Probe Comes Ahead Of Leadership Change
The development comes days before HDFC Bank is set to undergo a change at the top. Anup Bagchi is scheduled to take over as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on October 27, succeeding Sashidhar Jagdishan.
The bank is also set for another senior-level exit, with Deputy Managing Director Kaizad Bharucha due to step down at the end of December.
Earlier this year, former chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned, citing differences between his personal values and certain practices at the lender. An independent legal review commissioned by HDFC Bank subsequently found that the concerns raised by him were not substantiated.
HDFC Bank has not disclosed the identities of the two executives involved in the latest matter or announced any action against them. The bank's internal review remains underway.
