Stock Market Update 17 August 2026: Sensex Drops Over 300 Pts; Nifty 50 Below 24,300

The broader Indian stock market indices traded in the red on Monday morning. While the Sensex lost over 300 points, the Nifty 50 traded below 24,300. Sectoral indices, meanwhile, traded mixed.
Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 were trading in the red as the market reopened on Monday, 17 August 2026, after the weekend break.
At around 9:18 AM, the Sensex was down by 335.63 points (0.43%) to trade at 77,673.62. The Nifty 50 was also trading lower by 76.20 points (0.31%) to trade at 24,289.80.
Notably, on Friday, 14 August 2026, the indices ended on a weak note. At the closing bell, the Sensex stood at 78,009.25, down 0.09%. The Nifty 50 stood at 24,366, down 0.12%.
How Are Other Indices Performing?
Not just the Sensex and the Nifty 50, but other broader indices were also in the red during early trading on Monday.
At around 9:20 AM, Bank Nifty was down by 227.55 points (0.40%) to trade at 57,263.55. The Nifty Financial Services index was also down by around 115 points (0.44%) to trade at 26,098.25.
Sectoral indices, however, traded in mixed directions. Nifty Auto (up 0.45%), Nifty Metal (up 0.01%) and Nifty Pharma (up 0.14%) were in the green. Nifty FMCG (down 0.54%), Nifty PSU Bank (down 1.09%) and Nifty IT (down 0.76%) were in the red.
Top Gainers And Losers
During early trading on Monday, about 1,477 shares were in the green, 1,337 shares were in the red, and 241 shares were unchanged.
The top gainers on Nifty included Eicher Motors, Hindalco, Apollo Hospitals, M&M and Adani Enterprises.
The top losers were JSW Steel, Jio Financial, SBI, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories and ITC.
How Are The Global Markets Performing?
Global markets gave mixed cues on Monday as oil prices continued to climb.
