Closing Bell, 28 October 2026: Sensex And Nifty 50 End In The Red As Bears Take Control Of Dalal Street
Markets end lower as IT shares and rising crude oil prices pressure benchmarks.

Dalal Street ended Wednesday on a weak note. Sensex and Nifty declined amid IT stock losses and rising oil prices, despite Jio Platforms’ blockbuster listing.

It was a day of mixed emotions for investors. While they celebrated the blockbuster debut of Jio Platforms on exchanges, the end of benchmarks in the red made the day somewhat bitter.

The frontline indices, the Sensex and Nifty 50, declined amid weakness in information technology (IT) shares and rising crude oil prices. Upon close, the Sensex finished at 73,246.03, down 0.48%. On the other hand, the Nifty 50 ended at 22,698.85, down 0.22%.

Broader markets, however, finished in positive territory with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100ending 0.43% and 0.90% higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty IT, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Oil & Gas ended in the red. On the other hand, the Nifty Auto finished the day in green (see table).

The following stocks emerged as the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Crude oil prices moved higher on Wednesday as an attack targeting a Saudi refinery raised fresh concerns over oil supplies from the Middle East, where the conflict involving Iran and its proxies continues.

At around 15:35, Brent crude January 2027 futures stood at $110.71 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude December futures stood at $101.21 per barrel.

While gold traded almost flat on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), silver traded lower. At around 15:37, MCX gold December 2026 futures stood at ₹1,44,130 per 10 grams, down 0.01%. At the same time, MCX silver December 2026 futures stood at ₹1,95,075 per kg, down 0.83%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

  • Jio shares will be included under the margin trading facility (MTF) from today, according to an NSE circular.

  • A new heating unit is planned at GAIL India’s Ratnagiri LNG terminal as part of a ₹6 billion ($63.1 million) investment to regasify super-chilled fuel, the company’s business development director told reporters on Wednesday.

Jio Platforms’ blockbuster market debut provided a bright spot in an otherwise weak session on Dalal Street. However, losses in benchmark indices highlighted persistent pressure on large-cap stocks amid rising crude oil prices and weakness in the IT sector. Investors will continue to watch global cues and sectoral trends for further direction.
