A sharp fall in HDFC Bank and Axis Bank dragged benchmark indices lower on Monday. The Sensex closed at 77,708.52 and the Nifty at 24,238.50. Global markets also traded mixed on Monday.

Dalal Street started the week in the red as weakness in private banking stocks dragged the benchmark indices lower.

The BSE Sensex fell 442.93 points (0.57%) to close at 77,708.52, after slipping as much as 783.16 points during the session. The Nifty 50 declined 95.80 points (0.39%) to settle at 24,238.50.

Banking stocks accounted for most of the decline. Axis Bank dropped 5.37% after reporting its June-quarter earnings over the weekend, while HDFC Bank lost 5.08%.

The broader market, however, was mixed. Trent, Power Grid, NTPC and Bharti Airtel ended the day with gains, helping limit the fall in the headline indices.

During the early trading hours, US markets recovered as investors returned to technology shares ahead of a busy week of earnings from major companies. However, they fell later in the trading session.

Support

  • 24,200
  • 24,000

Resistance

  • 24,350–24,400
  • 24,800–25,000

Nifty is trading close to an important resistance zone of 24,350-24,400. A decisive move above this range could open the door towards 24,800-25,000. Until then, the index may continue to move within a broad range, with 24,200 acting as the first support.

The earnings calendar becomes busier this week, with several companies set to announce June-quarter results. Their numbers and management commentary are expected to keep stock-specific trading active.

Global sentiment was mixed, but developments in West Asia remain an important factor for risk appetite.

The banking sector will also stay under the spotlight after Monday's sharp reaction to the quarterly results. Whether buyers return to financial stocks could influence the broader market's direction through the session.
