Pre-Market 16 October 2026: GIFT Nifty Hints At Higher Opening As Investors Track Q2 Earnings And Crude Oil Prices

GIFT Nifty hints at a higher opening as investors track Brent crude, the rupee’s recovery to ₹95.05 per dollar, global markets and Q2 earnings for Friday's session.
Indian equities are set for Friday’s session following Thursday’s sharp rally, with GIFT Nifty pointing to a higher opening as investors track crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and fresh Q2 earnings amid continued pressure on global technology stocks.
How Did Indian Markets Perform On Thursday?
The Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to close at 74,315.61 on Thursday. The Nifty 50 advanced 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to settle at 22,997.35, its highest close in two weeks.
IT and private banking stocks led the recovery, with auto shares also among the gainers. The rally came even as technology stocks faced heavy selling across several Asian markets, suggesting that domestic buying held up despite the weak global backdrop.
The rupee also extended its recovery, closing at around ₹95.05 against the US dollar. Lower crude prices and a softer dollar supported the currency, alongside recent RBI measures. Brent crude oil price fell over 2% to $103.55 a barrel during Thursday’s trade as markets assessed the possibility of additional oil supply, though geopolitical risks remained.
Global Markets
In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 1.08% to close at 52,177.69, while the S&P 500 gained 0.33% to 7,744.06. The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.08% to close at 26,713.03.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 rose 1.08% to 10,840.35, and France’s CAC 40 gained 0.78% to 7,934.70.
Asian markets saw sharper losses. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell 4.90% to 64,425.95, while South Korea’s KOSPI index crashed 7.57% to 5,554.22 as SK Hynix shares dropped 11.06% and Samsung shares fell 9.48%.
GIFT Nifty Today
At 7:29 am on 16 October 2026, GIFT Nifty was trading at 23,079.50, up 91.50 points, or 0.40%, which was above the Nifty 50’s close of 22,997.35. The gap points to a potential higher opening for Indian equities on Friday.
Nifty 50 Technical Setup
The Nifty 50 tested the 23,000–23,100 resistance zone on Thursday. This area combines a recent breakdown level with a retracement level from the previous decline.
A sustained move above 23,100 could open the way towards 23,500. If the index fails to cross that hurdle, it may continue consolidating within the 22,600–23,100 range.
What Investors Should Track On Friday?
Foreign investor activity and the durability of Thursday’s rebound will be important domestic cues. Investors will also assess how the rupee and crude oil prices move, given their implications for imported inflation and corporate costs.
The Q2 earnings calendar brings another set of stock-specific triggers on Friday, including Punjab National Bank, LTIMindtree, Federal Bank and DLF. Their results and management commentary may influence sentiment across banking, IT and real estate.
Global interest-rate expectations and the ongoing sell-off in Asian technology stocks remain important external factors.
