Nifty Pharma Falls Over 1.5% As Divi's Labs, Sun Pharma Shares Decline; Why Are Pharma Stocks Falling Today?

Pharma stocks came under selling pressure on October 14, dragging the Nifty Pharma index down more than 1.5%. Divi's Labs, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's, Mankind Pharma and Cipla were among the stocks trading lower.
Pharma stocks came under sharp selling pressure on Wednesday, October 14, dragging the Nifty Pharma index down more than 1.5% as losses in Divi's Laboratories, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Mankind Pharma and Cipla weighed on the sector.
The Nifty Pharma index was down around 1.6% near 25,650 in afternoon trade, making pharma one of the weakest sectoral pockets in an otherwise volatile market. Divi's Laboratories shares were down more than 2%, while Sun Pharma fell around 2%. Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Mankind Pharma, Cipla, Ipca Laboratories and several other constituents also traded in the red.
The sector-wide decline came as the broader market gave up early gains, with investors booking profits following Tuesday's rally. Continued foreign institutional investor selling, elevated crude oil prices and higher global bond yields also kept sentiment cautious.
With losses spread across most of the index rather than concentrated in a single company, Wednesday's fall appeared to reflect broader selling pressure across pharma stocks rather than one company-specific development.
Why Are Pharma Stocks Falling Today?
The Nifty Pharma index was among the weakest sectoral indices on Wednesday as selling intensified across heavyweight and mid-sized pharmaceutical stocks.
Divi's Laboratories was among the biggest drags on the index, falling more than 2% during the session. Sun Pharma also traded lower, while Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Mankind Pharma, Cipla, Torrent Pharma, Gland Pharma, Laurus Labs and Aurobindo Pharma were among the other stocks under pressure.
The weakness came alongside a cautious broader market. The Sensex and Nifty surrendered early gains as investors booked profits following the previous session's rally.
Foreign institutional investor flows also remained a key market concern. FIIs extended their selling streak to 13 consecutive sessions on October 13, recording net sales of around ₹1,305 crore.
Crude oil prices near $107 a barrel added another layer of caution to the market as investors tracked geopolitical developments and their potential impact on inflation and India's import bill.
Elevated global bond yields also remained in focus, keeping risk appetite subdued despite strength in information technology stocks.
For pharma specifically, Wednesday's selling was broad-based. Divi's Labs, Sun Pharma, Dr Reddy's, Mankind Pharma and Cipla all traded lower, indicating pressure across multiple large constituents rather than a fall driven by one stock alone.
Divi's Labs, Sun Pharma Among Top Pharma Stocks Falling
Divi's Laboratories emerged as one of the major losers within the Nifty Pharma pack, with the stock falling more than 2% during Wednesday's session.
Sun Pharma shares also declined, while Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Mankind Pharma and Cipla remained under pressure.
Ipca Laboratories, Sai Life Sciences, Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Gland Pharma, Laurus Labs and Aurobindo Pharma were also trading lower, widening the decline across the sector.
The broad selling pulled the Nifty Pharma index towards 25,650 in afternoon trade, extending its losses to more than 1.5%.
The decline also came after recent weakness in the sector. Nifty Pharma has lost ground over the past week, while Wednesday's fall widened the gap between pharma and the outperforming IT sector.
With no single fresh company-specific development accounting for the decline across the index, the movement remained tied to broad selling across pharma counters alongside profit-booking and cautious sentiment in the wider market.
