Rupee Opens Flat Near 95 As Oil Prices Rise, Dollar Holds Firm

The Indian rupee opened largely unchanged against the US dollar on 2 September 2026. Higher crude oil prices and rising US Treasury yields weighed on the currency, offsetting some support for the rupee. The latest concern is the Middle East. Renewed fighting between the US and Iran has stirred worries about oil supplies from the region. That has kept the dollar firm and put the RBI response under focus.
The Indian rupee opened marginally higher against the US dollar on 2 September 2026, but remained close to the 95-per-dollar mark as rising crude oil prices and firmer US Treasury yields weighed on sentiment.
The rupee opened at 94.92 per dollar, compared with Tuesday's close of 94.95. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to keep a close watch on movements in the foreign exchange market.
Brent crude rose to $95.57 per barrel, while the dollar index was around 99.74-99.77, as fresh hostilities involving the US and Iran renewed concerns about prolonged disruptions to crude supplies from the Middle East.
RBI Intervention In Focus
Higher oil prices could lift dollar demand from Indian oil companies. That may put some pressure on the rupee.
Market participants will therefore track the RBI's stance closely, particularly if elevated crude prices translate into stronger import-related dollar demand.
Asian Currencies Mostly Trade Lower
The rupee's subdued opening came against a largely weaker Asian currency backdrop. The South Korean won was among the few regional currencies to gain, while most others declined against the dollar.
South Korean Won | +0.27% |
Indonesian Rupiah | -0.12% |
Japanese Yen | -0.08% |
Philippine Peso | -0.28% |
Taiwan Dollar | -0.11% |
Thai Baht | -0.08% |
China Renminbi | -0.06% |
Malaysian Ringgit | -0.05% |
Singapore Dollar | -0.02% |
Oil, Inflation Concerns Keep Dollar Firm
The dollar remained firm on Wednesday as renewed tensions in the Middle East pushed oil prices higher and revived concerns about inflation.
A sustained rise in crude prices could complicate the outlook for currencies of oil-importing economies such as India. For the rupee, the key levels in the near term remain around the 95-per-dollar zone, with oil prices, dollar strength and RBI action likely to determine the direction.
The immediate focus will remain on whether higher crude prices trigger stronger dollar demand from domestic importers and whether the RBI steps in to smooth excessive currency volatility.
