Stock Market Update 2 September 2026: Sensex Slumps Over 500 Pts; Nifty 50 Below 23,900
Sensex and Nifty 50 slumped and traded in the deep red on Wednesday morning.

Broader Indian stock market indices opened and traded in the deep red in early trading on Wednesday. While the Sensex dropped approximately 532 points, the Nifty 50 traded below 23,900. 

The Indian stock market indices were trading in the deep red after the market opening on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.

At around 11:58 AM:

  • The Sensex was down by 683.36 points (0.87%) to trade at 76,274.98.

  • The Nifty 50 was down by 241.40 points (1.00%) to trade at 23,814.35.

At one point, Sensex was trailing by over 1% to trade at an intraday low of 76,136.

On Tuesday, 1 September 2026, both benchmark indices fell significantly from the day’s highs and closed in the red. At the closing bell, the Sensex stood at 76,944.28, down 0.02%. The Nifty 50 stood at 24,055.80, down 0.10%.

Apart from the Sensex and the Nifty 50, other broader indices also traded in the deep red during early trading on Wednesday.

At around 11:58 AM, Bank Nifty was down 395.95 points (0.69%) to trade at 57,013.65. The Nifty Financial Services index was also down by around 1.10% to trade at 25,716.75.

Most sectoral indices also traded in the red, with Nifty Auto suffering the most.

  • Nifty Auto was down 3.25%.

  • Nifty Pharma was down 0.37%.

  • Nifty FMCG was down 0.68%.

  • Nifty Metal was down 0.78%.

  • Nifty PSU Bank was down 0.33%.

  • Nifty IT was down 1.56%.

  • Nifty Private Bank was down 0.80%.

  • Nifty Realty was down 1.90%.

  • Nifty Commodities was down 0.32%.

Global markets were also bearish on Wednesday amid rising crude oil prices:

  • S&P 500 futures were little changed as of 12:04 PM Tokyo time.

  • Nikkei 225 futures (OSE) fell 2.6%.

  • Japan’s Topix fell 2.2%.

  • Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell 1.2%.

  • Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 1.2%.

  • The Shanghai Composite fell 1.1%.

  • Euro Stoxx 50 futures fell 0.4%.

  • Gold prices under pressure: Higher treasury yields and a stronger dollar pushed gold prices down on Wednesday.

  • Oil prices surge: Global crude oil prices surged again on Wednesday amid the escalations between the US and Iran. Brent crude traded around $96 per barrel.

  • Rupee opens Higher: The Indian rupee is trading flat at 94.96 per dollar against the previous close of 94.95.

  • Global bond yields surge: A surge in global bond yields also contributed to Wednesday’s market downfall.
