Bears prevailed over bulls in today’s trading session as benchmarks tumbled for the second consecutive day this week and closed in the negative. High oil prices and escalating US-Iran tensions hit sentiment. At the closing bell, the:

  • Sensex stood at 75,577.58, down 0.73%

  • Nifty 50 stood at 23,635.10, down 0.61%

Broader markets, however, finished positive. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 closed the day 0.21% and 0.17% higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty Realty declined. On the other hand, the Nifty Metal and Nifty Media outperformed (see table).

Stocks of the following companies were the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Gold and silver traded mixed on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). At 15:39, MCX gold prices for October 2026 futures stood at ₹1,52,924 per 10 grams, up 0.07%. MCX silver prices for December 2026 futures during the same time stood at ₹2,38,570 per kg, down 0.19%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

  • Adani Power improved its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, assessed by NSE Sustainability, which stood at 66 compared to 65 in FY 26.

  • Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) poured a net ₹49,830 crore in July and August, with consumer services attracting more than a third of the total buying.

  • In the first five months of FY27, the BSE initial public offering (IPO) index surged 35%, its strongest April to August performance in three years.

Crude oil prices extended their gains as a prolonged Middle East conflict raised concerns about disruptions to crude supplies. At around 15:39, Brent crude oil November 2026 futures stood at $98.58 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil October 2026 futures stood at $93.94 per barrel.

Going ahead, markets are likely to remain volatile as investors track developments in the Middle East, crude oil prices and broader global cues. Persistent geopolitical uncertainty could keep sentiment cautious in the next trading session.
