Closing Bell, 17 August 2026
Sensex and Nifty 50 ended lower in Monday’s trading session amid domestic and global worries.

Sensex and Nifty ended in the red. However, broader markets gained. Rising crude prices and Middle East tensions remained key concerns for investors during the session.

Bears took control of D-Street in today's trading session. At the closing bell, the BSE Sensex stood at 77,728.16, down 0.36%. The Nifty 50 stood at 24,287.65, down 0.32%.

Broader markets, however, ended the day in the positive. The Nifty Midcap 100 index and Nifty Smallcap 100 closed 0.05% and 0.36% higher, respectively. Sector-wise, the Nifty PSU Bank underperformed and closed 0.37% lower.

Stocks of the following companies were the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Gold and silver rose on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) amid uncertainty in the Middle East. At 15:38, MCX gold prices for October futures stood at ₹1,55,123 per 10 grams, up 0.40%. MCX silver prices for September futures during the same time stood at ₹2,37,328 per kg, up 0.60%.

Some of the other major headlines of the day are as follows:

  • Larsen & Toubro (L&T) received an order worth over ₹15,000 crore to develop multiple offshore facilities in the Middle East.

  • BSE Clearing has introduced a 3-working-day contract in the securities lending and borrowing segment. This gives market participants a shorter window to borrow and lend securities.

Crude oil prices climbed as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowed over the weekend. At around 15:37, Brent crude oil futures for October 2026 stood at $89.56 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures for October 2026 stood at $82.33 per barrel.

Industry watchers believe that markets are likely to remain volatile in the coming days. Investors are likely to track global developments and movements in crude oil prices before taking fresh positions.
