Jio Platforms IPO Puts Telecom Stocks In Focus As Bharti Airtel Shares Jump 3%, Vodafone Idea And Reliance Rise

Telecom stocks moved higher on Thursday as investors assessed what Reliance Jio's upcoming IPO could mean for valuations across the sector. Bharti Airtel gained more than 3%, while Vodafone Idea and Reliance Industries also traded higher.
Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Industries shares traded higher on Thursday, October 15, as Reliance Jio's upcoming initial public offering put India's telecom sector in focus. Bharti Airtel led the gains, rising more than 3%, while Vodafone Idea advanced around 1.5% and Reliance Industries also traded higher in morning deals.
At 10:45 am IST, Bharti Airtel shares were trading at ₹1,849.20 on the NSE, up ₹54.60 or 3.04%. Vodafone Idea was at ₹12.86 at 10:46 am, up ₹0.19 or 1.50%. Reliance Industries shares were also trading higher after gaining around 2% earlier in the session.
The moves came as investors assessed the implications of the Reliance Jio IPO for India's listed telecom companies. Jio has set a price band of ₹1,065-₹1,119 per share for its public issue, putting a fresh public-market valuation on India's largest telecom operator and drawing attention to how listed rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea could be valued in comparison.
The Jio IPO is therefore not only a Reliance Industries event. Market participants are also assessing whether a separately listed Jio could sharpen investor focus on India's telecom sector, where Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel account for the bulk of higher-value subscribers while Vodafone Idea remains the third private operator.
Why Bharti Airtel And Vodafone Idea Shares Are Rising Today
Bharti Airtel emerged as the strongest mover among the three telecom-linked stocks on Thursday. The stock gained more than 3% in morning trade as attention shifted to how Jio's proposed valuation could influence the way investors value other listed telecom businesses.
According to analysts cited by Mint, Jio's listing could provide a fresh valuation benchmark for the telecom sector. A strong valuation for Jio could potentially support valuation comparisons for Bharti Airtel, while greater investor attention on the sector may also bring Vodafone Idea back into focus.
The IPO could also make comparisons between Jio and Bharti Airtel more direct for public-market investors. Until now, investors seeking exposure to Jio have had to own Reliance Industries, whose businesses also span oil-to-chemicals, retail and new energy. A separately listed Jio would allow the telecom business to be valued independently.
Vodafone Idea shares also moved higher, although the gain was smaller than Bharti Airtel's. The stock was up 1.5% at ₹12.86 at 10:46 am IST.
The broader market was positive on Thursday as well, meaning the Jio IPO should not be viewed as the sole reason for gains across all three stocks. The IPO, however, provided a fresh sector-specific trigger as investors assessed its implications for telecom valuations.
What Jio IPO Could Mean For Telecom Stocks
Reliance Jio's IPO is expected to be one of India's biggest public issues and would create a separately listed vehicle for Reliance Industries' telecom business.
For Reliance Industries shareholders, the IPO could help establish a clearer market valuation for Jio rather than keeping the telecom operation embedded within the conglomerate. Reliance Industries shares gained around 2% in morning trading on Thursday as investors assessed the IPO and broader market cues.
For Bharti Airtel, the Jio valuation could provide another benchmark for India's telecom market. Investors can compare the two operators on subscribers, average revenue per user, earnings and growth once Jio becomes separately traded.
The immediate market reaction was strongest in Bharti Airtel, with the stock gaining more than 3% by mid-morning, while Vodafone Idea rose around 1.5%. The three stocks will remain in focus as investors assess the Jio IPO valuation and what it signals for India's telecom sector.
