Ashishkumar Chauhan’s Three-Decade Journey
Ashishkumar Chauhan’s three-decade journey from NSE’s formative years to the potential NSE IPO.

The career of Ashishkumar Chauhan, MD and CEO of NSE, has closely mirrored the transformation of India’s capital markets. If NSE completes its IPO during his current tenure, it could mark his fifth association with an IPO while leading the exchange.

Ashishkumar Chauhan is currently the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE). His association with India’s capital markets stretches back more than three decades, including the formative years of the NSE.

Four public-market listings have already been associated with him through his leadership roles or the institutions he has led. Now, with the NSE initial public offering (IPO) taking place during his current tenure, his career could connect the exchange’s founding phase with its entry into the public markets.

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) made its stock-market debut in February 2017, when Chauhan was its Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). He took charge of BSE in 2012 and remained in the leadership position until 2022.

The listing of the Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) followed four months later in June 2017. At the time, BSE held a 50% stake in CDSL under his leadership, creating another link between his tenure and a major market listing.

In November 2023, Protean eGov Technologies entered the public markets while he was leading NSE. The exchange held a stake of around 20% in Protean when the company launched its IPO.

The sequence continued in August 2025 with the listing of the National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL). Under his leadership, NSE held around 24% in NSDL at the time of its IPO.

The potential NSE IPO could take this sequence to five listings during Chauhan’s career as a business leader.

If NSE goes public during the remainder of Chauhan’s current tenure, he could become the only appointed CEO in India to have seen five IPOs unfold under his leadership or institutional association.

He was present when the idea of NSE was conceptualised in 1992, the same year that the Harshad Mehta securities scam exposed structural weaknesses in India’s securities market. The period that followed brought a major shift in how Indian markets operated.

NSE’s potential public listing would add another chapter to that progression and could give Chauhan’s existing IPO record a distinction that would be difficult to replicate.
