NCDEX Launches Chennai Rainfall Futures Contract For Monsoon Risk
Chennai Rainfall Futures: NCDEX Launches RAINCHNNAI Contract

NCDEX has launched RAINCHNNAI, a rainfall futures contract linked to Chennai, allowing market participants to manage financial exposure to the North-East monsoon, which contributes nearly 70% of the city’s annual rainfall.

The National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX) has launched RAINCHNNAI, an exchange-traded weather futures contract based on rainfall in Chennai. The contract will help market participants manage financial exposure linked to the North-East monsoon.

The North-East monsoon accounts for nearly 70% of Chennai’s annual rainfall. This makes rain a significant factor for businesses exposed to weather-related financial risks.

Unlike conventional insurance, the contract is standardised and cash-settled based on observed rainfall data.

The RAINCHNNAI contract uses a Cumulative Deviation Rainfall model to measure the difference between actual rainfall and the long period average (LPA).

The model uses rainfall recorded at Chennai’s Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam stations and is based on decades of data from the India Meteorological Department. This allows the settlement of the futures contract to be determined using observed rainfall rather than an assessment of losses suffered by an individual participant.

The contract is intended to provide a way for market participants to hedge against financial exposure arising from the North-East monsoon. The exchange said the standardised and transparent structure allows rainfall-linked risk to be managed through a cash-settled exchange-traded product.

Kedar Deshpande, Chief Business Officer at NCDEX, said the Chennai contract extends the exchange's weather derivatives framework to the retreating North-East monsoon, which primarily affects southern India.

RAINCHNNAI follows RAINMUMBAI, the exchange's rainfall futures contract for Mumbai. The Mumbai contract was developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and uses official India Meteorological Department data.

The two contracts cover the two major monsoon systems during different parts of the year. RAINMUMBAI covers the South-West Monsoon from June to September, while RAINCHNNAI covers the North-East Monsoon from September to December.

Together, the contracts provide rainfall risk management coverage across the June-to-December monsoon period.

The rainfall futures are settled purely on observed data. This means participants do not need to go through a conventional loss-assessment process before settlement. According to NCDEX, this structure can support faster settlement and reduce the operational requirements associated with assessing individual losses.
