MCX Electricity Futures Post Record ₹245 Crore Turnover; Open Interest Hits New Peak

MCX electricity futures recorded their highest-ever single-day turnover of ₹245 crore on 4 September. Trading volume and open interest also reached record levels.
Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) electricity futures recorded their strongest trading session to date on 4 September, with turnover reaching a record ₹245 crore as activity in India's electricity derivatives market continued to pick up.
A total of 4.20 lakh megawatt-hours (MWh) was traded during the session, the highest volume recorded since the contract was launched. Open interest, meanwhile, climbed to 1.40 lakh MWh, also a record for the product.
Trading in electricity futures has been gaining ground over the past few months. Average daily volume in FY27, up to 3 September, was 89,213 MWh, against 65,631 MWh in FY26, an increase of about 36%.
Open Interest Rises Sharply
The increase in open interest has been stronger than the rise in volumes.
Average open interest during FY27 so far stood at 76,357 MWh, compared with 52,548 MWh in FY26. That works out to a rise of nearly 45%.
For the electricity futures market, the higher open interest suggests that more participants are keeping positions open rather than limiting their activity to short-term trades. The contract is increasingly being used by market participants to deal with uncertainty around power prices.
Activity Extends To Longer-Dated Contracts
Trading has not remained limited to the nearest expiry. All four available expiry-month contracts have seen activity.
The longer-dated contracts have also become more liquid, giving participants the option to take positions further into the future.
That is particularly relevant for companies and other users exposed to changes in electricity prices. Power producers and buyers can use such contracts to manage price exposure over a longer period instead of relying only on the spot market.
The record 4 September session adds another milestone to MCX's electricity futures segment, where participation and trading activity have continued to increase.
