Tata Power Pursues 2.8 GW Data Centre Opportunities With 18 Operators As AI-Linked Power Demand Rises

Tata Power is exploring over 2.8 GW of data centre opportunities with 18 operators, including 1,150 MW of green energy requirements. Read more.
Tata Power is pursuing data centre-related opportunities totalling more than 2.8 gigawatt (GW), with 18 domestic and international operators in discussions with the company.
The pipeline covers three areas of its business: distribution, transmission and renewable energy.
In a regulatory filing on 14 October, Tata Power said the opportunities include around 430 megawatt (MW) of upcoming load under its distribution network, 1,236 MW linked to transmission and 1,150 MW of green energy capacity.
The company is looking to supply more than electricity to data centre developers. Its offering includes grid connections, renewable power, energy storage, cooling systems and other utility infrastructure.
Mumbai Grid Plan Includes New Receiving Stations
Tata Power is upgrading its transmission network in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to meet the expected rise in electricity demand from large data centres.
The work includes strengthening its existing 110 kV and 220 kV networks, setting up new receiving stations and developing a 400 kV transmission ring network.
These projects fall under the company's ₹15,000-crore Mumbai Grid Upgradation and Expansion Plan. The upgrades are intended to support rising power requirements across the region, including those from large data centre facilities.
AI Data Centres May Add 26.3 GW To Demand
The scale of the opportunity is linked to the amount of electricity artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure could require in the coming years.
The Ministry of Power estimates that AI data centres could need another 26.3 GW of electricity by FY32. This could create more business for Tata Power going ahead.
