Tata Chemicals Share Price Jumps 20%: RBI Decision, Soda Ash Deal Lift Stock; Here’s Why
Tata Chemicals hits 20% upper circuit as Tata Sons listing hopes and a US soda ash deal lift sentiment.

Tata Chemicals Share Price Today: Tata Chemicals hit its 20% upper circuit at ₹735, its best single-day gain since October 2021, driven by TCNA's acquisition of Searles Valley Minerals' soda ash contracts and RBI's rejection of Tata Sons' bid to avoid a mandatory stock market listing.

Tata Chemicals shares hit the 20% upper circuit at ₹735 on Tuesday, September 15, after two separate developments put the stock in focus. The company’s North American arm completed a soda ash customer contract acquisition, while the Reserve Bank of India’s decision on Tata Sons revived expectations of a public listing for the Tata Group holding company.

Tata Chemicals was among the top gainers on the Nifty 500 during Tuesday’s session. At the upper circuit, more than 18.5 lakh shares were pending for purchase on the NSE, with no sellers available.

The company said Tata Chemicals North America (TCNA) completed the acquisition of customer contracts from Searles Valley Minerals Inc. on September 11 after meeting the required conditions.

The contracts cover more than 5 lakh metric tonnes of soda ash to be supplied over a two-year period. TCNA had emerged as the successful bidder in Searles Valley Minerals’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

The second trigger for Tata Chemicals was the RBI’s rejection of Tata Sons’ application to surrender its core investment company registration.

The decision means Tata Sons will continue to be classified as an Upper Layer NBFC, a regulatory category that carries a mandatory stock market listing requirement. Tata Sons had applied for deregistration in March 2024 after repaying more than ₹21,000 crore of debt during 2024.

The development is significant for Tata Chemicals as the company owns a 2.53% stake in Tata Sons.

Tata Steel and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles each hold a 3.06% stake in Tata Sons. Tata Power owns 1.65%, while Indian Hotels, Tata Consumer Products and Tata Investment Corporation hold 1.11%, 0.40% and 0.25%, respectively.

Tata Sons has remained unlisted despite being the holding company of the Tata Group, with interests spanning businesses such as information technology, automobiles, steel, consumer products, aviation and hospitality.

The RBI had classified Tata Sons as an Upper Layer NBFC in September 2022. The company subsequently sought to exit the regulatory framework rather than proceed with a listing. The rejection of its deregistration application now leaves the listing issue back in focus.

Shares of other Tata Group companies also moved higher following the RBI decision. Tata Investment Corporation gained more than 13%, while Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Steel also traded in the green.

For Tata Chemicals, Tuesday’s move comes despite a weak first-quarter earnings performance. The company reported an 81% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹60 crore for the quarter ended June 2026, compared with ₹316 crore a year earlier. Total income, however, increased to ₹4,311 crore from ₹3,815 crore.
