Sun TV Share Price Jumps 18% On Potential SunRisers Hyderabad Demerger Reports
Sun TV shares surge 18% as reports of a potential SunRisers Hyderabad demerger emerge.

Sun TV shares jumped 18% on September 30 after reports that the company is preparing for a potential demerger of its SunRisers Hyderabad cricket franchise. The stock has gained around 47% over eight sessions.

Sun TV Network shares rose as much as 18% on Wednesday, September 30, after a CNBC-Awaaz report said the company is preparing for a potential demerger of its cricket franchise, SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The stock was up for the eighth consecutive session and had gained around 47% over that period, according to the report. Sun TV was also the biggest driver of gains in the Nifty Media index, which rose nearly 4% during the session.

The report has put the focus on Sun TV's ownership of the IPL franchise and the possibility of separating the cricket business from the company's core media operations. However, the demerger is currently being reported as a potential transaction and should not be treated as a completed corporate action.

The Tamil Nadu-based entertainment firm’s shares have been on a strong run in recent sessions. The stock had gained around 47% over eight consecutive sessions before Wednesday's move.

At around 2:05 pm on September 30, the stock was trading at ₹646 apiece, down 16.5% from the day's high, while its market capitalisation stood at nearly ₹25,500 crore.

The sharp movement in Sun TV also lifted other media stocks. PVR Inox gained more than 4%, while Saregama India rose over 3%. The Nifty Media index was up almost 4%, marking its second straight session of gains.

The stock's recent rally comes despite it having touched a 52-week low of ₹447.20 on September 21, according to market data.

Sun TV owns the SunRisers Hyderabad IPL franchise as part of its sports business. The company also operates SunRisers Eastern Cape, which plays in South Africa's T20 league. Its annual report says Sun TV acquired SunRisers Leeds in the UK during FY26, expanding its international sports portfolio.

The potential demerger report has therefore brought the value of the cricket business into focus. A separation could allow the sports assets to be valued independently from Sun TV's television, radio and digital businesses, although the reported proposal does not provide enough details to establish the structure or timeline of any such transaction.

Sun TV's June-quarter financial disclosures show that its cricket franchises generated ₹629.83 crore of income in the quarter ended June 30, 2026, compared with ₹473.03 crore in the year-ago period. The corresponding costs stood at ₹321.17 crore, against ₹256.09 crore a year earlier.

Sun TV's core operations include television broadcasting across multiple Indian languages, FM radio and the Sun NXT digital platform, alongside its cricket franchises.

For now, the market reaction is centred on the reported potential separation of the SRH assets. Any formal announcement from Sun TV on the structure, valuation, shareholders' entitlement or timeline of a demerger would provide further clarity on the proposal.
