PSU Bank Stocks Rise Up To 6%: Bank Of Maharashtra, Bank Of India, Canara Bank, PNB, SBI In Focus

PSU bank stocks rise up to 6%, led by Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India, Canara Bank, PNB and SBI, extending the sector's August gains.
Shares of public sector banks rose sharply in morning trade on Wednesday, August 26, with Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank (PNB) and State Bank of India (SBI) among the biggest gainers as investors continued to favour the sector despite subdued sentiment across the broader market.
The Nifty PSU Bank index rose 1.8% in morning trade. Individual stocks posted stronger gains, with the five lenders rising between 1% and 6%.
The move extends a broader run of gains for state-owned banks this month. The Nifty PSU Bank index has climbed 4% so far in August, significantly ahead of the 0.60% gain in the Nifty Private Bank index. The Nifty 50, meanwhile, has remained broadly flat with a negative bias over the same period.
The divergence suggests that the buying interest in PSU lenders has been more sector-specific than a reflection of a wider recovery in the equity market.
Q1 earnings keep PSU banks in focus
The latest gains follow healthy first-quarter results for FY27 from lenders across the public sector banking space, which have helped maintain investor interest in the segment.
The June-quarter earnings have become an important factor behind the sector's performance this month, with investors assessing lenders on profitability, loan growth and asset quality. The continued gains through August suggest that the market's focus has extended beyond individual quarterly announcements to the broader improvement in the operating performance of PSU banks.
The sector has also undergone a significant balance-sheet clean-up over recent years, leaving several state-owned lenders in a stronger position compared with previous cycles of elevated stressed assets. This has helped improve investor sentiment towards the group as earnings have strengthened.
The contrast with private-sector banks has become particularly visible in August. While the Nifty Private Bank index has gained only 0.60%, PSU banks have added around 4%, indicating stronger investor preference for the state-owned segment.
Bank of Maharashtra, Bank of India among stocks in focus
Bank of Maharashtra and Bank of India were among the stronger performers in Wednesday's session, while Canara Bank, PNB and SBI also recorded gains.
The moves add to the sector's monthly advance and come despite the lack of a corresponding rise in the broader benchmark. Investors appear to be continuing to rotate towards pockets of the market where recent earnings have provided greater visibility on profitability and balance-sheet strength.
The sector's performance will now be closely watched for whether the earnings-led momentum can continue beyond August, particularly as investors weigh the outlook for credit growth, margins and asset quality for the rest of FY27.
