L&T-MHI Consortium Secures Al Maktoum
L&T-MHI consortium wins up to ₹5,000-crore order for APM system at Al Maktoum International Airport.

L&T and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have secured an order worth up to ₹5,000 crore to design and build the Automated People Mover system for Phase 1 of Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport. The project will cover the complete APM system, including construction, equipment, testing and commissioning.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has won a major transportation infrastructure order in Dubai. L&T's transportation infrastructure business, along with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), will design and build the Automated People Mover (APM) system for Phase 1 of Al Maktoum International Airport.

L&T said the order is worth up to ₹5,000 crore. The project will be delivered on a turnkey basis and will cover construction, equipment supply, testing, commissioning and operational readiness.

An APM is a driverless transport system used at airports to move passengers between terminals and other airport facilities.

Under the contract, L&T will handle the design, procurement, delivery and integration of several parts of the APM network.

The work will include guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution systems, signalling and telecommunications. It will also cover onboard communication systems, platform screen doors and equipment for the depot.

MHI will bring its experience in APM systems to the project, while L&T will take care of its share of the integrated design and construction work.

The project is being developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects.

The APM project forms part of the long-term expansion plan for Al Maktoum International Airport.

Once the planned development is completed, the airport is expected to handle up to 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight each year. This would make it the world's largest airport by passenger capacity.

L&T said the project adds to its presence in the region as Gulf countries continue to invest in metro systems, urban transport and other large mobility projects.

Ramkumar S, L&T's executive vice-president and head of Transportation Infrastructure, said the project reflects the scale of integrated APM systems that the company can deliver.

He also highlighted the combination of MHI's APM technology and L&T's experience in integrated rail systems.

L&T provides turnkey design-build and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for railway and metro projects.

Its capabilities cover design, engineering, procurement, project planning, quality control and project execution.

The company is currently working on integrated rail systems projects for the Mumbai Metro, Dhaka Metro and Jakarta MRT networks.

The Al Maktoum International Airport order further expands L&T's transportation infrastructure business in the Gulf region.
