The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has signed contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore for eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy. The agreements were signed on 02 November 2026 with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).

The contract value is approximately ₹6,733 crore per corvette. The programme is intended to strengthen the Navy's capabilities in anti-submarine warfare, surface combat, coastal defence and maritime surveillance.

GRSE will construct five corvettes, while GSL will build the remaining three.

A day later, at 11 am on 03 November 2026, the GRSE share price was at ₹2,211.70, up 8.06% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The stock opened at ₹2,085.60 and touched an intraday high of ₹2,235. Its low for the session was ₹2,050.60.

The proposed vessels are expected to carry missiles, weapons and sensors for threats from the air, surface and underwater. Their systems are expected to include radar, sonar, electronic warfare equipment, combat management systems and communication networks.

The corvettes are designed for coastal and littoral operations, along with selected offshore missions. They could also support anti-submarine operations alongside maritime patrol aircraft, helicopters and underwater sensors.

The project is also notable because the vessels have been designed indigenously by the Indian Navy. The shipyards were selected through a competitive process.

The project is estimated to generate 72 lakh person-days of employment at shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days across ancillary industries and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) over ten years. This adds up to 5.32 crore person-days.

The expected industrial activity could involve steel, precision engineering, electrical equipment, shipbuilding materials, electronics and maritime services. However, the employment estimates depend on domestic sourcing and timely execution.
