Great Eastern Shipping Share Price: Stock Jumps 3% As Board To Consider Buyback Proposal

GE Shipping’s plan to consider a share buyback on August 27 lifted investor sentiment, with the proposal coming shortly after the company reported a 159% year-on-year jump in Q1 FY27 net profit to Rs 1,309 crore.
Shares of Great Eastern Shipping Company (GE Shipping) surged more than 3% in early trade on Tuesday, August 25, after the company said its board will consider a proposal to buy back fully paid-up equity shares later this week.
The stock climbed to an intraday high of Rs 1,380 on the NSE, up 3.5% from Monday’s close of Rs 1,333. It subsequently pared gains and was trading at Rs 1,350.20, up Rs 17.20, or 1.29%, in afternoon trade.
The company said in an exchange filing that its board will meet on Thursday, August 27, to consider the proposed buyback in accordance with SEBI regulations. The announcement was made after market hours on Monday.
The size of the proposed repurchase, the price at which shares may be bought back and other terms will be known after the board considers the proposal. The company will communicate the outcome of the meeting to shareholders after it concludes.
Following the announcement, the trading window for designated persons will remain closed from August 25 to August 29 under the company's Code of Conduct for Prohibition of Insider Trading.
GE Shipping Q1 Performance
The buyback proposal comes after GE Shipping reported a sharp improvement in its financial performance for the first quarter of FY27.
Consolidated net profit jumped 159% year-on-year to Rs 1,309 crore in the June quarter, compared with Rs 505 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations increased 67% to Rs 2,005 crore from Rs 1,201 crore in the corresponding quarter of FY26.
The improvement also extended to operating earnings. EBITDA rose 108% year-on-year to Rs 1,338 crore from Rs 643 crore, while the EBITDA margin expanded to 66.70% from 53.49%.
The shipping business remained the biggest contributor to revenue. Revenue from shipping operations rose to Rs 1,890.97 crore in Q1 FY27 from Rs 994.21 crore in the year-ago period. Revenue from the offshore services business also increased to Rs 406.02 crore from Rs 350.41 crore.
GE Shipping, along with its subsidiaries, operates in shipping and offshore oil drilling services.
GE Shipping Share Price: Stock Performance
GE Shipping shares have gained around 298% over the past five years and more than 77% in three years. The stock has risen over 41% in the past year and is up around 21% so far in 2026. The recent trend has been weaker, however. The shares are down around 6.1% over the past month, although they have gained about 3.6% in the last five trading sessions.
The stock touched a 52-week high of Rs 1,798 on May 19, 2026, while its 52-week low stands at Rs 922.50, recorded on September 1, 2025.
GE Shipping had a market capitalisation of around Rs 19,270 crore as of Tuesday. The stock's price-to-earnings ratio was 5.15, while its dividend yield stood at 3.13%. The company has a quarterly dividend of Rs 10.56.
GE Shipping Shareholding Pattern
As of June 30, 2026, promoters, including directors and associate companies, held 30.07% of GE Shipping. Foreign investors, including FIIs and GDR holders, held 32.13%.
Government entities, financial institutions and corporates accounted for another 12.81%, while Indian public shareholders held the remaining 24.99%.
GE Shipping Buyback History
The company has undertaken share buybacks in the past. In FY2021-22, GE Shipping repurchased 41.99 lakh shares for Rs 133.23 crore at an average acquisition price of Rs 317.26 per share.
In FY2019-20, it bought back 38.11 lakh shares for Rs 99.99 crore at an average price of Rs 261.60 per share. The company had also carried out buybacks in FY2013-14, FY2001-02 and FY2000-01.
The latest proposal is still subject to the board's consideration on August 27. The final size, price and other terms of the proposed buyback will be announced after the meeting.
