India Joins Global 6G Initiative With US And 24 Other Countries
India joins a US-led 25-nation initiative to guide the next-generation 6G technology.

India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a global initiative focused on guiding the development and deployment of next-generation 6G telecommunications networks.

India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in an international initiative aimed at shaping the development and deployment of next-generation 6G telecommunications networks. The US Department of Commerce announced the development on 7 September 2026.

The agreement was finalised after a bilateral meeting between US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and India's Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada during the G20 Innovation Ministerial.

The development comes as India seeks a greater role in the global technology and innovation ecosystem.

According to the US Department of Commerce, the effort is intended to ensure that future networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen competitiveness and encourage innovation in 6G technology.

The Indian minister led the country's delegation to the G20 Innovation Ministers’ meeting, which was held on 1 and 2 September 2026 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).

India's delegation included Ajit Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and senior officials from MeitY, the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) and the Embassy of India in the US.

The discussions between India and the US extended beyond 6G technology to three other areas: semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres.

The possibility of greater US investment in the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) 2.0 programme and the proposed strengthening of the AI technology partnership between the two countries were also discussed.

Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) could remain in focus as India advances discussions around the spectrum requirements for next-generation mobile networks.

The three telecom operators have urged the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to make the full 1,200 MHz 6 GHz band, covering 5,925 MHz to 7,125 MHz, available for licensed International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) services.

Reliance Jio has proposed that the full 6 GHz band be auctioned in a technology-neutral manner for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) applications, including 6G. Bharti Airtel has sought India-specific coexistence trials involving mobile base stations and satellite uplink earth stations before the spectrum is auctioned.
