Bank Strike Update, Banks To Open On Sunday September 27 Before 3-Day Strike

Public sector and regional rural banks will open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of the September 28-30 bank strike. The RBI-approved special working day gives customers an extra opportunity to complete branch-related transactions before the three-day disruption begins.
Public sector banks and regional rural banks will remain open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of a three-day nationwide bank strike scheduled from September 28 to 30. The special working day has been arranged to give customers an additional opportunity to complete branch-related banking work before the strike begins.
The Reserve Bank of India has approved the opening of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on September 27, according to the Finance Ministry. Banks have been asked to make arrangements so that customers can access essential services before the three-day disruption.
September 26 is the fourth Saturday, followed by Sunday on September 27. The special opening means customers will have access to physical bank branches on September 27 before the strike starts on Monday.
Why Are Banks Opening On September 27?
The decision comes ahead of the nationwide bank strike called by bank employee unions for September 28, 29 and 30.
The United Forum of Bank Unions has called the strike over several demands, including the implementation of a five-day banking week. Talks between the government, Indian Banks’ Association and bank unions on September 22 did not result in a settlement, and the strike call remains in place.
September 30 also falls during the half-yearly closing period for banks, making the timing important for banking operations and customers with pending transactions.
Banks have been advised to inform customers about the strike and take steps to reduce disruption. Customers who need services that require a branch visit can use September 27 as an additional working day.
What Bank Services Will Be Available During The Strike?
While bank branches may remain affected during the September 28-30 strike, digital banking services are expected to continue operating.
Customers can continue to use internet banking, mobile banking, UPI and ATMs for routine transactions. However, services that depend on branch employees or physical processing may face delays during the strike period.
Cheque-related services and other branch-dependent transactions could also be affected. Banks have been directed to maintain critical systems, including payment infrastructure, data centres, treasury operations and cheque-clearing arrangements.
State Bank of India has separately advised customers to complete important branch-related work before the strike and use digital channels wherever possible during the affected period.
For customers, September 27 will therefore be the key additional banking day before the three-day strike starts. Those with pending branch visits, cheque-related work or other physical banking requirements can use the Sunday opening to complete them ahead of September 28.
