ICICI Lombard Faces ₹1 Crore IRDAI Penalty Over Outsourcing And Compliance Lapses

IRDAI has imposed a ₹1 crore penalty on ICICI Lombard General Insurance over compliance lapses. The action put the insurer’s outsourcing and governance practices under regulatory scrutiny, while its shares were trading lower during the session on 8 September 2026.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has imposed a penalty of ₹1 crore on ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company Limited. The penalty is for certain defaults pertaining to outsourcing, vendor management and corporate governance.
As a result, investors would be assessing the ICICI Lombard share price based on the potential impact of the regulator’s findings and the company’s compliance processes.
As of 1:08 pm on 8 September 2026, ICICI Lombard shares were trading at ₹1,478.90, down 0.97% on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), from the previous close of ₹1,493.40. The stock opened at ₹1,500 and touched an intraday high of ₹1,503.30 during the session.
IRDAI Flags Compliance Gaps Across Key Operational Areas
IRDAI identified violations concerning outsourcing activities, vendor selection and due diligence, record maintenance, internal controls, governance and other applicable regulatory requirements.
The findings followed an onsite inspection of ICICI Lombard conducted in September 2019, followed by subsequent enforcement proceedings. The regulator said it established the violations after considering the inspection findings, the insurer’s submissions, and a personal hearing before a panel of two whole-time members.
The penalty was imposed under Section 102 of the Insurance Act, 1938, with the violations linked to the IRDAI (Outsourcing of Activities by Indian Insurers) Regulations, 2017 and the Guidelines on Corporate Governance for Insurers in India.
ICICI Lombard Directed To Take Further Compliance Action
Alongside the monetary penalty, IRDAI issued advisories to ICICI Lombard concerning additional compliance deficiencies. These included issues related to unallocated premium and delays in handling requests for free-look cancellations.
The insurer has also been directed to place the regulatory order before its Board and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) to IRDAI within the stipulated period.
The regulator said the enforcement action forms part of its broader effort to strengthen governance, safeguard policyholders and improve transparency and accountability in the insurance sector.
