Tata Motors’ Lucknow facility, which was established in 1992, has recently crossed the benchmark of producing a millionth commercial vehicle.

Recently, Tata Motors Ltd. marked a production milestone at its Lucknow facility, rolling out its millionth commercial vehicle as it accelerated the shift toward alternative fuel technologies.

The vehicle, a zero-emission electric bus, was unveiled in the presence of Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The company said the milestone aligns with its broader “green mobility” roadmap, which includes a target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2045.

However, even after the announcement, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles shares fell by 0.43% to ₹356.35 on 16 April 2026 at 12:14 pm.

Commissioned in 1992, the Lucknow plant has evolved from a regional assembly unit into a large-scale manufacturing hub spread across roughly 600 acres. It currently has an annual production capacity of about 100,000 units, covering a mix of buses and cargo vehicles, while also serving export markets across Southeast Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

At the event, Adityanath said the rollout of 1 million vehicles from the facility reflects the state’s growing manufacturing capabilities and adds that such industrial expansion supports Uttar Pradesh’s ambition of becoming a $1 trillion economy.

The Lucknow unit has also become central to Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle strategy following its 2025 business restructuring, with increasing emphasis on diversifying powertrain offerings. Alongside conventional internal combustion engines, the plant manufactures electric buses and trucks, and is developing hydrogen-based mobility solutions, indicating a gradual transition in its product mix.
