Stock Market Update 23 July 2026: Sensex Falls Over 300 Pts; Nifty 50 Below 24,000

The Indian stock market indices traded in the red during early trading on Thursday. While Sensex lost over 300 points, Nifty 50 traded below 24,000. Most sectoral indices, except Nifty Auto and Nifty FMCG, were also trading lower.
Both the Sensex and Nifty 50 were trading lower after the market opening on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
At around 9:19 AM, the Sensex was down by around 340 points (0.44%) to trade at 76,414.76. The Nifty 50 was also down by around 93 points (0.39%) to trade at 23,902.85.
On Wednesday, 22 July 2026, the indices closed on a weak note as continued tensions between the US and Iran impacted investors’ sentiments. At the closing bell, the Sensex stood at 76,755.05, down 0.92%. The Nifty 50 stood at 23,996.25, down 0.79%.
How Are Other Indices Performing?
Apart from the Sensex and the Nifty 50, other Indian stock market indices were also trading in the red on Thursday morning.
At around 9:21 AM, Bank Nifty was down by 249 points (0.44%) to trade at 56,877.45. The Nifty Financial Services index was also trading lower by around 74 points (0.28%) at 26,115.00.
Among the sectoral indices, only Nifty Auto (up 0.14%) and Nifty FMCG (up 0.15%) were in the green. Nifty Metal (down 0.07%), Nifty Pharma (down 0.93%), Nifty PSU Bank (down 0.31%) and Nifty IT (down 0.55%) traded in the red.
Top Gainers And Losers
Market breadth was mostly bearish in early trading on Thursday. About 887 shares were in the green, 1303 in the red, and 137 remained unchanged.
The top gainers on the Nifty included Eternal, Tata Consumer, ONGC, Bajaj Auto and Coal India.
The top losers were Dr Reddy's Labs, Interglobe Aviation, Infosys, Tata Steel and Cipla.
What About The Global Markets?
Global markets gave mixed cues on Thursday morning amid persistent tensions in the Middle East and persistently rising crude prices.

S&P 500 futures were little changed as of 10:48 AM Tokyo time.

Japan’s Topix rose 0.5%.

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.6%.

Hong Kong’s Hang Seng rose 0.7%.

The Shanghai Composite was little changed.

Euro Stoxx 50 futures were little changed.

Oil Prices Hike: Crude oil prices continue to rise due to the ongoing war. On Thursday, Brent crude hovered around its five-week high of $95 per barrel.

Rupee Opens Higher: The Indian National Rupee (INR) opens very marginally higher by 0.1% at 96.49 per US dollar on Thursday. The previous close was at 96.5650.
