Indian equities enter the new week after ending Friday on a muted note. The Nifty 50 rose 20 points, while the BSE Sensex was almost unchanged. Crude prices remained elevated, and Middle East tensions continued to weigh on sentiment.
How Did Sensex, Nifty Close On Friday?
The BSE Sensex rose 3.11 points to close at 77,540.83, while the Nifty 50 gained 20.15 points to settle at 24,252.
The broader market did better on the week, although sectoral performance remained mixed. Banking and metal stocks were among the stronger pockets, while IT stocks stayed under pressure amid concerns around US inflation.
The rupee closed at 95.71 against the US dollar on Friday. Despite gaining 3 paise, the currency remained under pressure due to geopolitical tensions.
What Happened In Global Markets?
US stocks ended higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.98% to 53,277.01, while the S&P 500 gained 0.43% to 7,674.37. The Nasdaq Composite added 0.44% to 26,180.46.
US stocks recovered as some pressure in the bond market eased, but higher oil prices remained a concern. Brent crude settled at $94.39 a barrel on Friday, extending its weekly gain as the Iran conflict continued to disrupt energy supplies. US President Donald Trump also threatened sanctions on countries supporting Iran, adding to uncertainty in the oil market.
European markets finished higher on Friday. The FTSE 100 rose 0.64% to 10,816.56, while the CAC 40 gained around 0.4% to close at 8,484.43. Resilient economic data and corporate earnings helped European equities.
Asian markets ended mixed on Friday. The Nikkei 225 fell 0.30% to 66,016.36, while the Hang Seng rose 1.21% to 26,009.46.
GIFT Nifty Today
On 24 August at 7:49 am, the GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,372.50, up 86.50 points, pointing to a potentially positive start for Indian markets on Monday.
Nifty 50 Technical Levels
The 24,200 level remains the immediate support for the Nifty 50. A break below this mark could bring 24,000 into focus.
On the upside, 24,350 is the first resistance. As per the technical outlook, a move above this level could take the index towards 24,500.
What To Watch In Monday's Trade?
Crude oil will remain a key trigger after Brent settled near $94 a barrel on Friday. Developments around the US-Iran conflict and the Strait of Hormuz will also be watched.
