Pre-Market 22 September 2026: GIFT Nifty Signals Positive Bias; US-Russia Tariffs And Oil In Focus
GIFT Nifty hints at a positive start as crude oil falls below $100 and US tariff risk over Russian oil stays in focus.

Indian equities enter Tuesday with a positive bias as GIFT Nifty gains, crude falls below $100, and markets track US-Russia tariff risks, Middle East developments, Trump-Xi talks and global market cues.

Indian equities enter Tuesday with the Nifty 50 closing above 23,400 as crude oil prices slip below $100 a barrel. Fresh US tariff powers that could target buyers of Russian oil add a new trade risk for India, while the Trump-Xi meeting and global market cues remain on the radar.

On Monday, the Nifty 50 rose 0.29% to 23,414.30, while the Sensex gained 0.76% to 74,858.99.

Twelve of the 16 major sectoral indices finished higher. Pharma, realty and consumer-facing stocks were among the stronger areas, while the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 0.29% and 0.07%, respectively.

Brent fell below $100 during Monday's session as hopes of diplomatic progress in the Middle East grew ahead of the UN General Assembly. Saudi Arabia has also been able to restore part of its oil shipments through alternative routes despite damage to its East-West pipeline.

At 8:02 pm IST, Brent crude was trading at $99.87, down 3.85%. The lower oil price also supported the rupee, which ended Monday at 95.81 against the US dollar.

Technology stocks led the move in the US markets. Falling crude prices and lower Treasury yields also helped sentiment after last week's pressure on global bonds.

On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,048.83, up 0.71%, while the S&P 500 had gained 1.49% to close at 7,764.70. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,122.09, up 2.26%.

European markets also recovered. The FTSE 100 closed at 10,739.01, up 0.75%, while France's CAC 40 ended at 8,138.94, up by 0.92%.

Asian markets were broadly firmer. South Korea's Kospi rose 1.65% to 7,007.72, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained about 1.18% to 25,042.71. Japan's Nikkei was closed on Monday for a public holiday.

At 7:55 am on 22 September, GIFT Nifty was trading at 23,499.50, up 60 points, or 0.26%, hinting at a positive opening for Indian equities.

Nifty 50 has immediate support around 23,300, which was Monday's low. The more important support zone remains at 23,100–23,000.

On the upside, 23,500 is the first hurdle, followed by 23,600 and 23,700. A sustained move above 23,600 could strengthen the near-term setup, while a break below 23,000 could bring fresh selling pressure.

The sharp fall in crude oil below $100 could offer some relief to oil-sensitive parts of the Indian market, although the durability of the decline will depend on developments around the Middle East.

US tariff risk will also remain on the radar after Trump signed a law giving his administration the power to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil, including India. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said New Delhi is studying the implications, while Indian refiners are assessing their Russian crude purchases.
