GIFT Nifty indicates a weak opening as crude oil, FII selling and earnings remain key drivers despite positive global market cues.
Indian benchmark indices finished lower on Tuesday for a second straight session.
The BSE Sensex fell 238 points (0.31%) to settle at 77,470.11, while the Nifty 50 lost 51 points (0.21%) to close at 24,187.70.
What Held Back Dalal Street On Tuesday?
The weakness was largely linked to geopolitical developments. Reports that Iran-backed Houthis could impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia renewed concerns over energy supplies.
Brent crude for September delivery hovered near $90 a barrel during market hours, reviving worries about inflation and higher interest rates.
Foreign portfolio investors also remained net sellers, adding pressure to the benchmark indices.
Selling was concentrated in PSU banking stocks, which ended 0.88% lower. IT stocks and Oil & Gas shares also lost ground. Realty stocks led the gains with a 1.07% rise, followed by Auto and Metal.
Broader markets continued to outperform, with the Nifty Midcap 100 climbing 0.30% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 advancing 0.53%.
Global Markets
US markets closed higher on Tuesday as semiconductor stocks bounced back ahead of earnings from major technology companies.
On 21 July, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 385.38 points (0.74%) to close at 52,224.64. The S&P 500 rose 65.92 points (0.89%) to 7,509.20, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 329.14 points (1.29%) to 25,837.21.
In Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 jumped 2,091.07 points (3.26%) to 66,232.19, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng slipped 10.76 points (0.04%) to 25,132.29.
In Europe, the FTSE 100 gained 61.15 points (0.58%) to end at 10,585.91, while France's CAC 40 rose 23.03 points (0.28%) to 8,363.14.
GIFT Nifty Signal
On 22 July at 7:26 am, GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,107.50, down 62 points (0.26%). The early reading places GIFT Nifty below Tuesday's Nifty close of 24,187.70, indicating a muted start for Wednesday's trade despite stronger global markets overnight.
Nifty Technical View
- Support: 24,100-24,050
- Resistance: 24,270-24,300
Nifty continues to face resistance in the 24,270-24,300 zone. A sustained move above this band could strengthen the ongoing recovery towards 24,450. On the downside, the 20-day EMA zone of 24,100-24,050 remains the first area of support.
What Could Shape The Market Outlook Today?
Corporate earnings remain the biggest domestic trigger, with more companies due to announce their June-quarter numbers during the week. Company-specific reactions are likely to keep several stocks active.
Global investors are also tracking developments in West Asia after fresh concerns over energy supplies pushed crude oil prices higher.
Foreign fund activity will remain another key monitor after continued selling in recent sessions. At the same time, the resilience in mid- and small-cap stocks suggests investors are still selectively buying companies backed by earnings expectations.
