Pre-Market 21 September 2026: GIFT Nifty Hints At Cautious Start; Oil, Iran News And US-China Talks In Focus

Indian equities head into Monday after a volatile week, with US-China trade talks, Middle East tensions, crude prices and global bond yields likely to influence sentiment. GIFT Nifty hints at a cautious start today.
Indian equities are set to head into Monday's session after another volatile week, as crude prices remain above $100 a barrel as Middle East supply risks persist while global markets watch the latest US-China talks.
Indian Markets Recap
The Sensex ended Friday at 74,294.96, down 19.63 points or 0.03%, while the Nifty 50 gained 75.80 points or 0.33% to 23,346.40. Broader markets outperformed as the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 rose.
The rupee remained close to the ₹96-per-dollar level. It ended Friday at 95.8750 against the US dollar.
Crude remains another factor for domestic markets. Brent settled at $104.87 a barrel on Friday, down 0.93%, after China asked Iran to limit Houthi attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure. Oil is still above $100, however, with supply disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and Saudi Arabia's damaged East-West pipeline keeping supply concerns alive.
Global Markets Update
US markets finished Friday mixed. The S&P 500 rose 0.17% to 7,650.50 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.39% to 26,522.55. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.18% to 51,682.64.
European equities had a weaker session. The FTSE 100 fell 1.45% to 10,659.13, while France's CAC 40 dropped 1.49% to 8,065.02.
Asian markets ended Friday on a firmer note. Japan's Nikkei 225 climbed 1.38% to 65,018.95, while South Korea's Kospi gained 2.66% to 6,894.23.
GIFT Nifty
At 7:35 am on 21 September, GIFT Nifty futures stood at 23,345.50, down 15.50 points, or 0.07%, pointing to a cautious start for Indian equities.
Nifty 50 Technical View
The immediate resistance for the Nifty 50 is placed at 23,500–23,600. A sustained move above this range could open the way towards 23,800, while the 23,100–23,000 zone remains the key support area.
The index has been moving within a range in recent sessions. A sustained break below 23,000 could increase selling pressure, while a move above 23,600 would change the near-term technical setup.
What Could Shape Monday's Trade?
The US-China talks in New York will be one of the key global developments to watch. Indian traders will track the US-China trade talks for their potential impact on Asian markets, commodities and global risk sentiment.
Tensions related to the Iran war remain in focus following Houthi attacks on Riyadh and after Iran's security chief, Mohsen Rezaei, laid out conditions for renewed talks with the US, keeping oil supply risks and crude prices on the radar.
Domestically, the NSE initial public offering (IPO) will enter its final day of subscription on Monday, after being subscribed 1.15 times as of 5 pm on 18 September. The ₹22,561 crore issue closes on 21 September, while traders will also track the rupee and crude prices.
