Pre-Market 20 August 2026: Nifty Falls For 7th Day; Oil Near $92; Key Triggers Today

Sensex fell 325 points to 76,909 and Nifty slipped 77 points to 24,078 on Wednesday, extending its losing streak to seven sessions. Oil prices, global bond yields and the Fed minutes will be watched on Thursday.
Indian equities ended lower again on Wednesday, with the Nifty extending its decline to a seventh session. Brent crude stayed near $92 a barrel, while higher global bond yields continued to weigh on risk appetite.
How Did Indian Markets Close On Wednesday?
The Sensex fell 325.78 points to 76,909.68, while the Nifty 50 declined 76.60 points to 24,078.30. The Nifty's seven-session losing streak is its longest in 11 months.
The weakness was broad-based. 14 of 16 major sectors closed lower, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100 indices fell 0.51% and 0.21%, respectively. Financial stocks remained under pressure, with ICICI Bank and Axis Bank declining. IT stocks bucked the trend as the Nifty IT index gained 0.73%.
Oil remained a concern for the domestic market. Brent crude hovered around $92 a barrel, while the rupee fell to a three-week low of 96 against the US dollar. Higher crude prices and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz continued to weigh on the currency.
Global Markets
US stocks ended higher on Wednesday after the previous session's technology-led sell-off. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 119.65 points at 53,463.05, while the S&P 500 gained 16.22 points to 7,707.98. The Nasdaq Composite rose 41.38 points to 26,331.09.
The recovery came as Treasury yields eased from their recent highs. The 30-year Treasury yield had touched its highest level since 2007 but moved lower after the US Treasury announced larger buyback operations for longer-dated bonds.
European markets were mixed on Wednesday. The FTSE 100 gained 0.14% to 10,743.35, while France's CAC 40 slipped 0.09% to 8,501.91.
Asian markets closed on a weaker note. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 3.16% to 65,326.42, while the Hang Seng edged up 0.09% to 25,495.07.
GIFT Nifty Today
On 20 August 2026 at 6:58 am, GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,216, up 126 points, pointing to a potential positive opening for Indian equities on Thursday. The futures contract is trading higher than Wednesday's Nifty 50 close of 24,078.30.
Technical View: Nifty 50 Key Levels
The 24,050-24,000 zone is the immediate support area for the Nifty 50. A convincing break below this zone could bring 24,000 and 23,850 into focus.
On the upside, 24,200 is the immediate resistance level. The index will need to reclaim this zone for a stronger recovery.
What To Watch In Thursday's Session?
Crude prices and developments around the Strait of Hormuz remain key triggers after Brent moved close to $92 a barrel. The US Federal Reserve's July meeting minutes will be in focus for the interest-rate outlook. GIFT Nifty and Asian market moves will also be on radar before Thursday's opening bell.
