Muhurat Trading Last 10 Years: 2022 Delivered The Biggest Gain, While 2017 Recorded The Weakest Session For Indian Markets

In 8 of the Muhurat Trading sessions in the last 10 years, 2016 to 2025, the Nifty 50 and Sensex closed higher than their previous trading-day levels. The strongest session came in 2022. Both benchmarks gained 0.88% that year.
Muhurat Trading is a special trading session in the stock market which is held on the occasion of Diwali, with the start of a new Samvat year. While investors often view the occasion as an auspicious start, the historical numbers show that positive returns are not guaranteed.
From 2016 to 2025, the Nifty 50 and the Sensex closed above their respective previous trading-day closing levels in eight out of ten sessions. However, both indices declined from their opening levels in nine sessions each.
This highlights the difference between the daily return and the movement recorded during the special trading window.

2022 Delivered The Strongest Muhurat Trading Session
The 24 October 2022 session recorded the biggest gain in the decade-long review. The Nifty 50 advanced 154.45 points, or 0.88%, to 17,730.75. The Sensex climbed 524.51 points, also gaining 0.88%, to 59,831.66. Gains in financial and other heavyweight stocks supported the advance.
The intraday picture was more mixed. The Nifty closed 5.60 points below its opening level of 17,736.35. The Sensex, however, rose 27.64 points from its opening level of 59,804.02. It was the only session in the 10-year period in which the Sensex finished above its Muhurat opening level.
At the other end, 2017 was the weakest year. The Nifty fell 0.63% against its previous close to 10,146.55. The Sensex also surrendered its early gains, ending at 32,389.96 after opening at 32,656.75. Both benchmarks also declined in the 2016 session.
What Does The Recent Muhurat Trading History Show?
The latest completed session, held on 21 October 2025, delivered the smallest positive daily gain of the decade. The Nifty rose 25.45 points, or 0.10%, to 25,868.60. The Sensex gained 62.97 points, or 0.07%, to close at 84,426.34. Both indices nevertheless ended below their respective opening levels.
The 2026 Muhurat Trading session is scheduled for 08 November 2026. The historical record offers useful context. But the returns of the past decade do not guarantee a similar outcome in the next Samvat year.
