Domestic markets closed in positive territory, supported by gains in benchmark indices. However, weakness in broader markets and mixed sectoral performance reflected uneven participation in the day's rally. Read more.

Bulls maintained their juggernaut as benchmarks, the Sensex and Nifty, closed in positive at the end of today’s trade. Upon close, the:

  • BSE Sensex gained over 1,700 points and closed at 81,028.02, up 2.17%
  • Nifty 50 gained nearly 500 points and closed at 25,030.35, up 2.01%

Broader markets, however, registered a decline. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 ended the day 0.02% and 0.82% lower, respectively.

Among sectoral indices, the Nifty IT, Nifty Metal, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Oil & Gas closed in the positive (see table).

Stocks of the following companies emerged as the top four gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Fresh attacks on oil tankers pushed crude prices higher. Traders also considered the potential impact of the ongoing war involving the US, Israel and Iran.

At around 15:39, Brent crude January 2027 futures stood at $97.62 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude December futures stood at $89.66 per barrel.

Gold and silver traded lower on the Multi-Commodity Exchange of India (MCX). At around 15:40, the gold price today on MCX for December 2026 futures stood at ₹1,42,379 per 10 grams, down 1.19%.

At the same time, the silver price today on MCX for December 2026 futures stood at ₹1,85,177 per kg, down 1.05%.

Here are some other headlines for the day:

  • For the first time, the combined valuation of companies listed on the BSE exceeded ₹500 lakh crore on Thursday. It was supported by a widespread rally in equities and new stock market listings.

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has authorised fund managers and portfolio management service providers to determine whether their investors meet the criteria for accredited status and issue the necessary certification.

The benchmarks may attempt to extend their gains in the next trading session. However, the broader market performance and sectoral participation will remain important to watch. Developments in crude oil prices, particularly amid tensions in the Middle East, could also influence investor sentiment.
