The Sensex and Nifty ended higher as easing geopolitical tensions lifted sentiment. Broader markets also advanced in today’s trading session. Read more.

The BSE Sensex and Nifty ended today’s trading session on a high, largely due to positive developments on the geopolitical front. Upon close, the Nifty 50 stood at 24,774.30, up 1.60%. The Sensex stood at 78,639.03, up 0.70%.

Broader markets also ended in the positive territory. The Nifty Midcap 100 index ended 1.21% higher. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index also ended 1.29% higher. On the sectoral front, the Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty FMCG and Nifty Metal ended in the positive territory. The Nifty Media, on the other hand, underperformed (see table):

Stocks of the following entities were the top five gainers and losers in the Nifty 50 today:

Crude oil prices saw a sharp decline due to easing in West Asia tensions. Both Brent Crude and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) saw a decline. At 15:40, Brent oil futures for October 2026 stood at $83.72 per barrel. During the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures for September 2026 stood at $79.73 per barrel.

Some of the other significant headlines of the day are as follows:

  • India's Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 53.5 in July from 54.2 in June, its lowest since August 2021.

  • Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) purchased Indian stocks worth ₹20,200 crore in July, according to NSDL data.

  • Godfrey Phillips India shares jumped more than 6% in intraday deals following ITC’s June quarter earnings and brokerages turning upbeat on the cigarette sector.

Gold and silver prices shot up following President Trump’s remarks on halting strikes on Iran. They traded higher on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX). At 15:41, gold October futures on the MCX stood at ₹1,43,639 per 10 grams, up 0.18%. At the same time, September silver futures stood at ₹2,18,324 per kg, up 0.52%.

In the coming sessions, investors are now likely to turn their attention to upcoming domestic macroeconomic data, corporate earnings and global developments. These will play a vital role in shaping market sentiments and deciding market direction.
