Sensex and Nifty 50 ended higher despite weak global cues.

Benchmarks managed to end in the green despite weak global cues and caution ahead of Nvidia’s earnings. Broader markets traded mixed. Read more.

Though benchmarks traded mostly in the red throughout the day, they managed to end in the green at the end of today’s trading session. At the closing bell, the:

● BSE Sensex stood at 77,529.94, up 0.21%

● Nifty 50 stood at 24,260.05, up 0.17%

Broader markets ended mixed. While the Nifty Midcap 100 ended 0.54% higher, the Nifty Smallcap 100 ended 0.10% lower. Sector-wise, the Nifty Metal index declined. On the other hand, the Nifty Auto, Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank registered gains (see table).

Stocks of the following firms were the top five gainers and losers on the Nifty 50 index today:

Crude oil prices registered marginal gains in early trading as the impact of tougher US sanctions on Iran weighed on investors. At around 15:40, Brent crude oil October futures stood at $88.16 per barrel. At the same time, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil October futures stood at $82.54 per barrel.

Gold and silver declined on the Multi-Commodity Exchange (MCX). At 15:44, MCX gold prices for October futures stood at ₹1,63,004 per 10 grams, down 0.14%. MCX silver prices for September futures stood at ₹2,42,644 per kg, down 0.65%.

Some of the other major headlines of the day are as follows:

  • Sugar prices declined by almost 15% in the wholesale market after the Centre's decision to allow duty-free imports of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar.

  • Sudarshan Chemical Industries Ltd, through its European subsidiary, Sudarshan Switzerland SLO AG, signed an asset sale and transfer agreement with Clariant Additives (Switzerland) AG to acquire its aluminium dyes and chemicals manufacturing plant in Muttenz, Switzerland.

Markets are likely to remain sensitive to the outcome of Nvidia Corp’s earnings and their subsequent impact on global indices in the upcoming trading sessions. Investors are also likely to track crude oil prices and developments around US sanctions on Iran.
