BPCL-backed IBV Brasil will invest $2.8 billion in Brazil’s SEAP-I offshore project after Petrobras approved the final plan, strengthening India’s energy security and overseas upstream presence.
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has received a major boost to its overseas energy strategy.
A BPCL-backed joint venture in Brazil will invest $2.8 billion (about ₹23,000+ crore) in a large offshore oil and gas development project after Brazil’s state-run giant Petrobras approved the Final Investment Decision (FID).
The project is an important step for BPCL as Indian oil companies look to secure overseas energy assets.
After the announcement, Bharat Petroleum Corporation's shares rose by over 0.68% to reach ₹310.05 on 17 April 2026 at 10:30 am.
What Exactly Has Been Approved?
The approval relates to the SEAP-I project in Brazil’s BM-SEAL-11 concession block. Petrobras, the operator of the consortium, cleared the final investment plan on 13 April 2026, while BPCL disclosed the development to exchanges on 16 April.
FID is critical because it means the project moves from the planning stage to actual development and capital deployment.
At the core of the project is a high-volume production vessel. The SEAP-I project is to be equipped with a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel, dubbed P-81.
Its capacity is expected to be 120,000 barrels of oil/condensate a day and 10 million cubic meters of natural gas processing a day. That makes it a large-scale offshore development with substantial output potential.

What Is BPCL’s Stake And Structure?
The investment will happen through IBV Brasil Petróleo Ltda, BPCL’s overseas venture. BPCL will hold 65.40% stake in IBV Brasil through subsidiaries, and IBV Brasil will own 40% participating interest in the concession block
This is a long-term positive for BPCL. It expands overseas oil exposure, improves access to equity crude, and diversifies earnings beyond refining and fuel retailing.
