The National Stock Exchange (NSE) shares fell below their initial public offering (IPO) price on Monday as the broader market came under heavy selling pressure and investors booked some of the gains made since the exchange's stock market debut.

The stock touched a low of ₹1,761, down more than 1% from the previous close. Indian equities also declined sharply during the session as higher crude oil prices added to concerns following the lack of progress in US-Iran peace talks.

NSE shares had listed on 24 September and ended their first session nearly 2% above the IPO price. The exchange was valued at around ₹4.49 lakh crore at the close, putting it among the world's seven largest exchanges by market capitalisation.

At 10:37 AM, the NSE shares were trading at ₹1,772, down 1.14%.

NSE shares opened at ₹1,800 on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), a 0.84% premium to the issue price of ₹1,785.

The stock climbed as high as ₹1,878 during the debut session, gaining 5.21% from the IPO price, before ending at ₹1,818. This represented a gain of 1.85% over the issue price.

The exchange's market capitalisation stood at ₹4,49,955 crore at the end of its first trading session.

By Monday, the valuation had dropped to around ₹4,37,580 crore. That represents a decline of approximately ₹12,375 crore from the debut-day valuation.

NSE had raised ₹22,569 crore through its IPO, making it the second-largest public issue in India.

The issue attracted bids for 50.58 crore shares against 8.86 crore shares on offer, resulting in an overall subscription of 5.71 times.

Institutional investors accounted for a large part of the demand during the IPO.

The exchange had set a price band of ₹1,700-₹1,785 per share, with the final issue price fixed at the upper end at ₹1,785.

The latest fall has brought NSE shares below that issue price just days after listing, as the stock faces both profit booking and the broader pressure on Indian equities.
