Nvidia Shares Hit Record High On AI Demand Optimism
Nvidia shares hit a fresh record above $237 as AI agent demand optimism and the buyback increase supported the latest rally.

Nvidia shares climbed to a fresh record high above $237, lifting the AI chipmaker's market capitalisation to roughly $5.7 trillion. The stock remained nearly 2% higher after easing from its peak.

Nvidia Corporation shares rose to a fresh all-time high above $237 on Friday, 2 October 2026, as investors responded to expectations that artificial intelligence (AI) agents could generate additional demand for semiconductors.

The stock later pared some of the advance but remained nearly 2% higher at $235.39 around 11:45 a.m. EDT.

The latest Nvidia rally has taken the company's market capitalisation to roughly $5.7 trillion. Its gain for the year stands at about 27%. The stock is now less than $300 billion away from becoming the first company to hit the $6 trillion mark.

Recent optimism around AI agents has supported Nvidia shares. AI stocks have also remained in focus as investors assess whether the growing use of AI agents such as Meta Platforms' Muse could translate into stronger semiconductor demand.

The Nvidia AI story has also evolved amid changing investor views about the scale of spending on AI infrastructure and concerns around the technology's safety.

Nvidia recently introduced a two-layer AI security system designed to prevent AI agents from operating outside intended parameters. The company said the system would have prevented a recent breach of Hugging Face by OpenAI’s models.

Nvidia announced a record $150 billion increase in its share buyback plan earlier in the week. The move provided another boost to the Nvidia stock rally alongside the renewed optimism around AI agents.

The company's performance has also strengthened the personal fortune of co-founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jensen Huang, who owns ~4% stake in Nvidia. His estimated net worth reached $203.2 billion on Friday, making him seventh among the world's richest people.

Nvidia's financing plans have prompted debate on Wall Street about the value of its advanced chips and the infrastructure supporting them. Banking sources and credit managers said some lenders are seeking higher guarantees and are assessing how long revenue from Nvidia's chips could continue.

The stock is on track for a fourth consecutive year of double-digit returns. The latest move therefore extends a broader run of strong annual performance rather than representing an isolated one-day advance.
