India’s LPG sourcing pattern is shifting sharply. Import shipments from the US are going to hit a record in June, while supplies from West Asia remain disrupted.
India is importing more cooking gas from the United States than ever before as disruptions in West Asia continue to reshape global energy trade. The latest trade data shows US LPG cargoes are expected to account for the bulk of India's imports this month, highlighting how quickly sourcing patterns have changed over the past few months.
Why Are US LPG Imports Rising So Sharply?
According to Kpler data reported by The Hindu, India has already imported around 635,000 tonnes of LPG from the US in June, accounting for nearly 65% of total LPG imports so far this month. Industry estimates suggest total US LPG imports could eventually reach 1.1-1.2 million tonnes in June, which would be the highest monthly level on record.
What Is Happening To Supplies From West Asia?
Before the recent supply disruptions, India sourced nearly 90% of its LPG imports from West Asia, with total monthly imports typically around 2 million tonnes. That dependence has changed over the past few months as refiners moved quickly to secure alternative supplies and avoid any disturbance in cooking gas availability across the country.
While LPG imports from the US have surged, shipments from traditional suppliers have fallen significantly. UAE supplies, which once formed a major part of India's import basket, dropped to around 90,000 tonnes during June. However, preliminary data suggests imports from the UAE may recover to about 223,800 tonnes by the end of the month.

India has also widened its sourcing base beyond its traditional suppliers. June imports are expected to include around 108,600 tonnes from Kuwait and about 116,200 tonnes from Iran, while additional cargoes are scheduled from countries such as Oman, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Qatar and Nigeria.
The shift becomes even more visible when compared with May, when India imported 648,300 tonnes of LPG from the US and 134,700 tonnes from the UAE. The latest trend highlights how quickly Indian refiners have diversified sourcing routes to ensure steady availability of LPG despite disruptions in supply from traditional suppliers.
